Mosiria: Nairobi County to intensify awareness campaigns against illegal dumping

By , January 24, 2026

Nairobi County has announced plans to intensify public awareness and education campaigns to curb illegal dumping across the city as part of broader efforts to restore cleanliness and order in the capital.

In a statement on Saturday, January 24, 2026, Nairobi County Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service Geoffrey Mosiria said the county will prioritise civic education, public engagement, and sustained awareness campaigns to address irresponsible waste disposal, particularly in the Central Business District (CBD) and other high-traffic areas.

“We cannot claim to aspire to standards higher than Singapore while deliberately ignoring basic civic responsibility, such as dumping waste next to litter bins in the CBD. This behaviour undermines our collective efforts to build a clean and orderly city.”

Mosiria emphasised that the county’s approach will be largely preventive rather than punitive, with enforcement measures used only as a last resort.

“We will intensify education, public engagement, and awareness campaigns against illegal dumping. Enforcement and arrests will only be applied as a last resort but make no mistake, accountability remains non-negotiable.”

Dumping in CBD

This comes a week after a Nairobian was forced to pick up a straw she had deliberately littered on a city street after being caught in the act by Mosiria.

In a video posted on his X handle on Thursday, January 15, 2026, Mosiria stated that the woman casually dropped the bottle near the Kenya Power offices, seemingly confident that no one was watching.

However, unknown to her, Mosiria was nearby and observed the incident unfold.

Moments later, Mosiria confronted the woman and instructed her to pick up the straw and dispose of it properly.

“This is a reminder that protecting our environment is everyone’s responsibility, even when we think no one is watching. Cleanliness is not enforced by fear, but by conscience,” he said.
