Mosiria calls on counties to invest in rescue boats as floods wreak havoc
By Valerian Khakayi, March 8, 2026As heavy rains continue to pound parts of the country, Nairobi County Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, has called on counties across the country to invest in rescue boats and water response equipment to strengthen emergency preparedness during flooding incidents.
In a statement shared on his official social media pages on Sunday, March 8, 2026, Mosiria emphasised that counties must take proactive measures to improve disaster preparedness, especially in regions that frequently experience flooding.
According to him, heavy rains are a natural occurrence that cannot be completely prevented, but proper preparedness can significantly reduce the loss of lives and property.
“I would also like to propose that counties consider investing in rescue boats and water response equipment, especially in areas that are prone to flooding. Such equipment can greatly assist emergency teams in reaching people trapped in flooded zones and help in safe evacuations,” Mosiria proposed.
“Since heavy rains are a natural occurrence that we cannot completely prevent, preparedness through such measures can save lives. I strongly urge counties across the country to consider adopting this approach as part of their disaster preparedness plans.”

At the same time, he urged residents to play their part in preventing floods by avoiding construction on drainage corridors, stopping the dumping of waste in waterways, and maintaining clean surroundings.
He says that improper waste disposal and blocked drainage channels remain major contributors to flooding in many parts of Nairobi.
“At the same time, I urge residents to avoid building on drainage corridors, stop dumping waste in waterways, and keep their surroundings clean, as these actions greatly contribute to flooding in our city,” he added.
Mosiria stressed that collaboration between government agencies and the public will be critical in managing the situation.
“Through coordination between government agencies and cooperation from residents, we can reduce the impact of the ongoing rains and protect lives and property,” Mosiria stated.

In addition, Mosiria added that Nairobi City County has intensified efforts to reduce the impact of the ongoing downpour and protect residents from potential disasters.
He added that emergency response teams have also been deployed, with essential equipment strategically positioned in flood-prone areas to ensure a swift response whenever residents are in danger.
“The Nairobi City County Government, in conjunction with the National Government, is committed to ensuring preparedness to curb the impact of the ongoing rains that have caused flooding in parts of the city. Our teams are actively working to unclog drainage systems, clear blocked waterways, and remove waste that obstructs water flow, allowing stormwater to move freely and reducing flooding in vulnerable areas,” he disclosed.
“In addition, emergency response teams have been mobilised and essential equipment positioned in flood-prone areas to ensure a quick response whenever residents are in danger.”
