KeRRA explains what is causing damage to Ngong-Suswa Road
By Valerian Khakayi, July 9, 2026The Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) has responded to public concerns over the condition of the Ngong-Suswa road, attributing the damage to overloaded vehicles using the route beyond its designed capacity.
In a public statement, issued on Thursday, July 9, 2026, the authority explained that the road was designed to accommodate vehicles carrying a maximum axle load of 10 tonnes. However, it has been subjected to trucks carrying loads of up to 50 tonnes, significantly accelerating the deterioration of the pavement.
“The Kenya Rural Roads Authority has noted concerns raised by the members of the public on the current state of the Ngong-Suswa road,” KeRRA stated.
“The Ngong-Suswa road was constructed with axle load limits of up to 10 tonnes per axle; however, the road has been subjected to traffic carrying up to 50 tonnes, which has accelerated its deterioration. This is evident, especially on the right side of the road as you go to Suswa.”
KeRRA further stated that the road is currently undergoing phased maintenance to repair pavement damage caused by excessive axle loads and to improve safety for motorists.
According to the roads authority, the Ngong-Suswa road has been open to traffic for the past eight years, with the final section completed in December 2025.
“The Authority wishes to clarify that Ngong-Suswa is currently undergoing maintenance in phases to address existing pavement distress caused by overloading and to improve safety for our road users. KeRRA further wishes to report that the Ngong-Suswa road has been open to traffic for the last 8 years, and the last section was only completed in December 2025,” KeRRA added.

Strict measures
To curb the problem, KeRRA said it has installed the Ngong-Suswa-Ewaso-Kedong Virtual Weighbridge, which detects overloaded vehicles and helps enforce axle load limits in line with the Traffic Act.
“Therefore, to address this, the Authority has installed a virtual weighbridge (Ngong-Suswa-Ewaso-Kedong Virtual Weighbridge) to detect overloaded vehicles and enforce axle load limit compliance as per the Traffic Act. Offenders not compiling have been arrested and charged,” KeRRA added.
The authority also appealed to transporters and other road users to comply with the stipulated load limits, saying adherence to the regulations is essential in protecting the national road infrastructure and extending the lifespan of the Ngong-Suswa road.
“The Authority is continuously improving the road to meet high traffic usage. We appeal to all road users to adhere to the stipulated load limits to ensure the safeguarding of this National Road asset,”KeRRA urged.
