Kenya Railways updates Kisumu train departure and return times

Kenya Railways has issued an update on the Kisumu route train departure time as it vows for a seamless and convenient journey to and from the lakeside city.

In a statement on the official Kenya Railways official X account on Teusday January 20, 2026, the Authority announced that the service resumption will get back to normal schedules.

“Our passengers to Kisumu are now assured of a seamless journey to and from the Lakeside city. When we resume journeys to and from Kisumu, we will revert to our normal schedule,” Kenya Railways said.

According to the Authority the train will be departing Nairobi Central station at 6:30 pm every Friday to arrive in Kisumu at 6:35 am.

Afterwards, the train will be departing Kisumu Railway Station at 6:30 pm every Sunday to arrive and is expected to arrive in Nairobi at 6:35 am.

“Where the train will be departing Nairobi Central station at 6:30 pm every Friday to arrive in Kisumu at 6:35 am.On the return trip, the train will be departing Kisumu Railway station at 6:30 pm every Sunday to arrive in Nairobi at 6:35 am.

Meanwhile, Kenya Railways further noted that development will see the Kisumu Safari train journey commence and terminate the return trip at Nairobi Central station making the trip more convenient.

“This development will see the Kisumu Safari train journey commence and terminate the return trip at Nairobi Central station making the trip more convenient and significantly improving the overall passenger experience,” Kenya Raiwalys said.

While improving the overall passenger experience, Kenya Railways has revealed that the freight customers will experience a sigh of relief, with large volumes of cargo delivered more frequently and within a short span of time.

“For the freight customers, the resumption of operations means large volumes of cargo delivered more frequently and within a short span of time. This will ease freight movement between Central and Western Kenya and will enhance cross-border trade with Uganda, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the wider East African region,” they added.
