Kenya Power has revealed the cause of a major power blackout that affected three regions late on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.

In a statement dated Tuesday, December 9, 2025, Kenya Power said that the outage followed a sudden disturbance on the interconnected grid linking Kenya and Uganda.

The utility company explained that the incident led to an unexpected shutdown affecting North Rift, South Nyanza, Western and parts of Central Rift.

Power outage details

Kenya Power noted that the disruption was widespread.

“At 7.14 p.m. this evening, an incident on the regional Kenya Uganda interconnected power network caused a disturbance on our system, resulting in a widespread power outage affecting customers in North Rift, parts of Western, South Nyanza and Central Rift regions,” Kenya Power said in a statement.

Also, the utility firm listed Eldoret, Nandi, Kitale, Nakuru and Naivasha among the affected areas.

Some sections of Nairobi also lost supply. Kenya Power stated that Ridgeways and Kasarani were among the estates hit during the brief blackout.

The update added that power was restored to most regions within half an hour.

“Power was restored to most of the affected areas within approximately thirty minutes; however, Eldoret and some surrounding areas remain without supply, and our teams are working to restore power as quickly as possible,” Kenya Power added.

The company apologised for the disruption. In its closing line, the statement reads, “We apologise to our customers in the affected areas for the inconvenience and truly appreciate your patience.”

Efforts to restore the supply

Kenya Power teams are still on the ground assessing sections of the grid that require stabilisation.

The firm has assured customers that full power restoration remains the priority for engineers monitoring the network through the night.

Energy analysts noted that interconnected grids often face challenges when disturbances occur across borders, making rapid restoration essential for economic activities that depend on an uninterrupted supply.

Local businesses reported temporary delays, especially in transport, retail and services that rely on steady power flow.

Residents in Eldoret also raised concerns about repeated outages in the region, urging Kenya Power to increase monitoring and investment in backup systems.
