KeNHA issues eviction notice to traders occupying Ruiru–Githunguri road reserve
By Katemarthason Okudo, July 10, 2026The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a 30-day notice directing traders and other unauthorised occupants to vacate the road reserve along the Ruiru–Githunguri–Uplands (B116) Road.
In a public notice dated July 10, 2026, the authority said all illegal roadside structures and goods must be removed by August 10, 2026.
The notice forms part of an ongoing road safety programme aimed at improving traffic flow and paving the way for infrastructure development along the busy road corridor.
Road reserve to be cleared for safety and development
The notice targets illegal roadside occupants, including traders operating within the road reserve and owners of unauthorised structures built along the route.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) hereby notifies all illegal roadside occupants, including traders and unauthorized structures along the Ruiru – Githunguri – Uplands (B116) Road, to remove their wares and vacate the road reserve within thirty (30) days from the date of this notice,” the notice stated.
Clearing the road reserve is expected to improve visibility for motorists, reduce safety risks and create space for planned infrastructure works. The exercise is also intended to ensure traffic moves without unnecessary obstructions along the highway.

Move aimed at improving road safety
KeNHA explained that the clearance is part of a wider initiative to make national roads safer for motorists, pedestrians and other road users.
“The project is part of the Authority’s ongoing road safety improvement initiative that seeks to reduce accidents and ensure the unobstructed flow of traffic along the highway as well as facilitation of infrastructure development along the project corridor,” KeNHA said.
The authority noted that encroachment on road reserves can interfere with road operations, increase the risk of accidents and slow down future road improvement projects.
Affected occupants given until August 10
Traders and other affected occupants have been urged to remove their structures and belongings before the expiry of the notice on August 10, 2026.
“All affected traders are urged to comply within the stipulated timeframe upon the expiry of this notice, on August 10, 2026, to avoid enforcement action in accordance with the relevant laws governing road reserves,” the notice stated.
Those who fail to comply within the 30 days risk enforcement action under laws governing the protection and management of road reserves.
