‘I’ve never seen my team excited about a visit in long time’ – Joe Biden on Ruto’s state visit

President Joe Biden welcomed President William Ruto to the White House on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, marking the official start of Ruto’s state visit to the United States.

During a brief moment with the press, Biden noted that President Ruto’s visit had been eagerly anticipated, highlighting the enthusiasm of his team.

“Our people and innovators are excited about this, I mean, I have never seen my team excited about a visit in a long time,” Biden said.

Ruto’s arrival in Washington, DC, on Wednesday marked the formal commencement of his state visit, even though he had landed in the US on Monday.

This visit also coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Kenya and the United States.

Biden Reflected on the long-standing partnership between the two nations reminiscing on his visit to Nairobi when he was Vice President.

“Mr President, I can’t thank you enough. When I visited Nairobi as Vice President, I stressed that the true strength of Kenya was its people; innovators, activists, entrepreneurs, and so many people like you. Today, as we honour 60 years of ties between our countries, it is true that our people are the true strengths of this partnership and a partnership that is working well,” Biden expressed.

Ruto’s visit and itinerary

President Ruto, along with Mama Rachel Ruto, landed at Andrews Air Force Base on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, ahead of his meeting with the US President.

They were warmly greeted by US First Lady Jill Biden at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, which is about 33 km from Washington, DC.

Ruto’s meeting with Biden

The visit includes a series of high-level meetings between President Ruto and his US counterpart, focusing on enhancing collaboration in trade, investment, security, and education.

The Head of State is also scheduled to meet with a congressional delegation and hold discussions at Capitol Hill, the US legislative house equivalent to a parliament.

On Thursday, President Ruto and Rachel will pay their respects by laying a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery, honouring fallen American soldiers and other notable figures.

Additionally, they will have a bilateral meeting with President Joe Biden to discuss development opportunities.
