Inside Kenya Power’s 24/7 National Control Centre keeping lights on nationwide

In a video published on its official X account on September 3, 2026, the power utility highlighted the round-the-clock operations required to keep electricity running in homes, schools, and businesses nationwide.
Describing the facility as its “nerve hub,” Kenya Power noted that real-time decisions are made at the centre to keep the national grid operational.
Inside the facility, control room staff sit before desktop computers and wall-mounted screens showing live data on power generation, grid transmission, and demand.
Balancing power supply and demand
Speaking in the video, Kenya Power staff member Eng. Ticha explained the constant effort needed to maintain stable power flow. Walking through high-voltage equipment bays before taking a seat in the control room, he shared how engineers manage the grid without stopping.

“Imagine 24/7, monitoring system voltage and frequency to ensure it’s no more, no less,” Eng. Ticha said. “Every day, every hour, every minute, no Christmas, no New Year, the whole country’s power supply is on our shoulders.”
He pointed out that control room teams monitor power coming from various generation sources, including geothermal steam fields at Olkaria, hydro dams along the Seven Forks system, and wind turbine farms.
Visuals in the video show service vehicles along power line routes as electricity flows from generation plants through transmission lines, substations, and transformers to reach customers.
Preventing grid collapse
Maintaining exact voltage and frequency margins is necessary to prevent outages and protect electrical equipment.
“These screens enable us to see the entire network, the generation and the demand. They also enable us to achieve the balance,” Eng. Ticha stated. “Everything has to be at the right frequency and right voltage within the right margins. Otherwise, we’ll have poor customer power supply quality or even power system collapse.”
Eng. Ticha added that technicians must make rapid decisions to maintain grid stability. Kenya Power reinforced this message in its accompanying post, noting that its personnel work continuously behind the scenes.
“Our teams work 24/7, monitoring frequencies, managing supply, and resolving issues before most people even notice. It’s this quiet precision and relentless commitment that keeps power on across the country,” the company stated.
