By , December 28, 2025

An illegal home-made firearm was voluntarily surrendered to police in the Oldonyorok area of Transmara South Sub-County, Narok County, in a move authorities say underscores growing public cooperation in efforts.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), the locally manufactured weapon was handed over by an individual and was found to be in possession of three rounds of ammunition.

In a statement on Saturday, December 27, 2025, NPS revealed that the firearm and ammunition have since been placed in safe custody pending further administrative action.

Police say the voluntary surrender is part of the ongoing national disarmament initiative aimed at improving public safety, promoting peace, and strengthening security through trust and collaboration between communities and law enforcement agencies.

“The National Police Service commends members of the public and local leadership for their cooperation and responsiveness to the government directive,” the Service said in a statement.

Authorities have urged anyone still in possession of illegal firearms to take advantage of the ongoing amnesty period and surrender the weapons without fear, reiterating the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the country.

The public has also been encouraged to continue partnering with the police by reporting suspicious activities.

“This can be done via the toll-free numbers 999, 911, or 112, or anonymously through #FichuaKwaDCI on 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp 0709 570 000.”

Baringo

This comes a month after police in Baringo County received two illegal firearms that were voluntarily surrendered by members of the public on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, in Tangulbei, within Tiaty East Sub-County.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), the surrender marks continued progress in the government’s peace and disarmament efforts across the North Rift region, where illegal possession of firearms has long fuelled insecurity and inter-communal conflict.

In a statement on Thursday, November 13, 2025, NPS commended the cooperation of local leaders and residents for their growing trust and participation in peacebuilding initiatives.

“The voluntary surrender reflects continued public goodwill and trust in the ongoing government-led peace and disarmament initiatives across the North Rift region,” the statement read in part.
