How police discovered and diffused explosives hidden under a bridge in Migori
By William Muthama, December 17, 2025A state of panic gripped residents of Nyatike Sub-county in Migori County after security officers discovered explosive materials hidden under a bridge, triggering a major security operation in the area.
According to Nyatike Sub-county Police Commander Juma Londo, the incident unfolded after police received a report at around midday from a Good Samaritan who had noticed a wire protruding from the soil at the edge of the bridge.

Commander Londo said officers immediately proceeded to the scene, where they confirmed that the wire was indeed emerging from beneath the ground next to the bridge, raising serious security concerns.
“At around noon, we received a report from a Good Samaritan who had seen a wire coming out from under the soil near the bridge. We came to the scene and confirmed that it was true,” Londo said on Tuesday, December 16, 2025.

He explained that due to the nature of the discovery, officers quickly secured the area and called in specialised units to handle the situation, noting that the intention behind planting the devices appeared to be malicious.
“We are appealing for information so that we can identify those involved, because this was done with bad intentions meant to cause harm,” he added.
Multi-agency team
A multi-agency security team, including the Kenya Police Service, DCI detectives, the Anti-Terror Police Unit, bomb disposal experts, and sniffer dogs, was deployed to thoroughly sweep the area.

The bridge was completely closed, and residents were barred from crossing as a safety precaution.
Commander Londo said residents initially expressed concern over the closure, but police officers later explained the situation to them, after which they cooperated and kept a safe distance as the operation continued.

Upon inspection, the bomb disposal unit discovered that the suspicious object was part of an explosive device hidden beneath the soil. The officers carefully excavated the area and recovered seven pieces of explosives along with a detonating cord, which had been planted in a hole drilled using a compressor machine.
The explosives were safely removed in accordance with established procedures, and the area was declared secure.
“The explosives were removed in a controlled and professional manner. The operation ended safely, and no one was injured,” Commander Londo said.
The recovered materials were taken away by the Migori bomb disposal unit for forensic analysis before eventual destruction, as investigations continue to track down those responsible for planting the explosives.
The incident comes at a time when President William Ruto is expected to grace the Pinyluo Cultural Festival in Migori County.
