Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital sees unusual surge in twin and triplet births
By Cynthia Lodite, December 24, 2025Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital has announced a huge record in twins and triplets born in the month of December, compared to other months, with the nurse in charge revealing that the births have exceeded the facility’s target.
In an interview with a local media house on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, the nurse in charge of the Newborn Unit, Linda Tindi, explained the significant rise in the number of twin and triplet births.
According to Linda Tindi, who is the nurse in charge of the Newborn Unit, in December, as of Wednesday, December 24, 2025, the facility has recorded at least two hundred and eighty births, which she maintains has exceeded the facility’s target.
“This month of December, we have had quite a surge in deliveries. Currently, as of today, we are around 280. We are approaching 300, and that is even exceeding the facility target,” Tindi said.
Tindi, while adding that December has had a sudden increase, went on explaining that the facility’s target is one hundred and fifty.

Facility exceeds target
“This facility’s target is around 150, and most of the time it exceeds the target. And we have had an increase in the multiple deliveries. By that, I mean there are triplets, and there are twin deliveries. There are high numbers as compared to the previous months,” she added.
“Today we had a mother delivering triplets. We have one that also delivered this week. And we have one also delivered; we have already discharged just today,” she said.
Tindi explained that a huge number of patients currently admitted to the maternity wings are mostly mothers with twins.
“Twins are quite a number as we speak now. When you visit the wards, you will find there are five; three are normal, good weights, and two are low birth weights. They are in the newborn units.
Linda went on to add that so far, the survival rate of newborns is at 90% compared to a past rate of 60% and 70%.
“This month, out of the 59, in December, we have lost two. And 57 are still alive. And that is about over 90% of our survival rate.
“Previously, back there, we used to have almost a 60% to 70% survival rate. And right now, we have had a survival rate of 90%. To mean out of the 59, we have admitted up to this point. Two have died, and 57 are alive. Some we have discharged home,” she added.
