Gen Z love: Why Babu Owino and Edwin Sifuna are winning young Kenyans’ hearts
By Valerian Khakayi, February 15, 2026Kenya’s young adults are increasingly rallying behind Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, and it is clear that the Gen Z demographic sees them as champions of their concerns.
Their support goes beyond social media. From wearing branded merchandise and attending rallies to tattooing their leader’s face and coining slogans in their honour, young Kenyans are showing a bold and visible form of political loyalty.
The connection feels less like traditional politics and more like fandom culture. Young Kenyans are engaging with Babu and Sifuna the same way they would support musicians or influencers, loudly, creatively and unapologetically.

Reasons for the love
What makes them stand out in a crowded political space? For many Gen Z supporters, it is about visibility, relatability and boldness.
The two leaders are seen as accessible and outspoken, often addressing issues that directly affect young people, including unemployment, governance and accountability.
During the 2024 anti-government protests, both Babu and Sifuna were seen speaking out in support of the youth.
Their public stance during that tense period earned them admiration and loyalty from young people who felt unheard. And for many Gen Zs, that moment cemented a sense of loyalty.

According to many Gen Z supporters, it was not just about statements but about presence. Showing up, speaking firmly and aligning themselves with youth concerns created a perception of solidarity that still resonates today.
For the youthful lawmakers, the message is clear: their willingness to stand with the youth during pivotal moments has strengthened their bond with a generation eager for change, visibility, and representation.
Political shift
This shift shows how politics is changing in the digital age. Leaders who speak directly about youth issues, show up during important moments, and stay active online are more likely to win Gen Z’s hearts.
Whether this online love will fully translate into ballot power remains to be seen. But one thing is clear in the court of youth opinion, Babu Owino and Edwin Sifuna are currently enjoying star status.
