Former hyenas’ hideout becomes a blessing to Juja residents

Land that was once feared as a hideout for hyenas in Juja’s Witeithie Ward is now being converted into a major social development centre following intervention by the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development.

The 20-acre parcel of land in the Nyacafa area is currently hosting several government projects being implemented simultaneously, including a health centre, social hall, ECDE centre, affordable housing units, a new secondary school, and the expansion of St George’s Primary School.

Speaking after touring the project site on Wednesday, January 29, 2026, Juja MP George Koimburi said the transformation will significantly improve the lives of residents, especially school-going children who had long been exposed to danger.

“This project is a game-changer for this community. For years, children had to walk long distances to school while risking attacks from hyenas. That fear will now be a thing of the past,” Koimburi said.

The MP added that the new health centre will address long-standing challenges in accessing medical services.

“This area has not had a public hospital for many years. Once completed, the health centre will ensure residents can access treatment without travelling long distances,” he noted.

Koimburi further said the affordable housing units under construction will provide decent shelter for residents who have lived without proper housing despite the area being a major producer of building stones.

“It is unacceptable that people who supply building materials for the country remain homeless. These housing units will restore dignity to many families,” he said.

Local residents have welcomed the developments, saying they mark the end of years of insecurity caused by the abandoned land.

Patrick Ndegwa, a resident, said the projects will bring relief to both traders and learners.

“For a long time, this land was dangerous. Children and early-morning traders lived in fear of hyena attacks. Now we are getting schools, a hospital, and housing. Our lives will change for the better,” Ndegwa said.

Residents noted that the ongoing projects will boost livelihoods by bringing essential social amenities closer to home, turning a previously neglected area into a productive public space.

Once complete, the development hub is expected to serve thousands of residents in Witeithie Ward and surrounding areas.
