Traders in Eastleigh are counting heavy losses after a fierce fire razed Yare Plaza on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with spirited efforts to rescue those trapped in the building.

Videos shared widely on social media show some occupants being lowered using ropes from windows and ledges while firefighters guided others to safety.

Thick plumes of smoke could be seen billowing with flames engulfing a section of the building as firefighters battled the inferno with dramatic efforts to rescue people from the building.

The fire spread rapidly and engulfed multiple floors, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

MP speaks on Yare Plaza fire

Area Member of Parliament Yussuf Hassan sympathised with the owner of the building and the traders impacted, stating that the losses are heavy.

“I am deeply saddened by the devastating fire that ravaged the interior of Yare Plaza this afternoon. My deepest sympathies go out to the owner, Haji Ahmed Abdullahi, as he grapples with the extensive damage to his property, and to the hundreds of traders who suffered immense losses when their goods were consumed by the fierce inferno,” the MP wrote.

He appreciated the firefighters who battled the inferno which broke out on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, in the afternoon.

“I extend my gratitude to the firefighters who battled relentlessly to subdue the stubborn blaze, along with the dedicated first responders and the countless community volunteers who stepped up to lend a hand in this time of crisis,” he added.

MCA’s statement

Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Airbase Ward, Fuad Hussein, has also issued a heartfelt message expressing his sorrow over the tragedy.

He said he was deeply heartbroken by the fire and could only imagine the pain, loss, and shock faced by the business owners, employees, and families affected.

“I am deeply heartbroken by the fire that erupted at Yare Plaza. I can only imagine the pain, loss, and shock that the business owners and families are going through at this moment. My sincere prayers are with each one of you during this very difficult time,” Fuad stated.

Investigations have been launched to establish the cause of the fire.
