Parents and carers have also been urged to take extra care of children, older persons and other vulnerable members of the community, who are more susceptible to cold-related illnesses.

Farmers have also been encouraged to monitor livestock and sensitive crops during the cold mornings, as lower temperatures may affect animal health and crop growth in some regions.

July cold conditions

The latest forecast continues the cold conditions that have been experienced in many parts of the country since June. Over the past several weeks, residents in the Central Highlands, Rift Valley and parts of Eastern Kenya have been waking up to chilly mornings and cool nights as the country moves through the cold season.

July is traditionally one of the coldest months of the year in Kenya, particularly in high-altitude areas such as Nairobi, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Murang’a and parts of the Rift Valley. During this period, temperatures often drop significantly at night and in the early morning before gradually rising during the day.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has therefore advised the public to continue taking precautions against the cold by dressing warmly, especially during the night and early morning hours, while ensuring children, older persons and other vulnerable groups are adequately protected.
