Security agencies have thwarted a planned large-scale terror attack targeting Nairobi following months of intelligence-led operations against a network linked to the Somalia-based extremist group Al-Shabaab.

According to a statement by the Counter Terrorism Policing, officers had been monitoring the activities of several individuals operating within the Dadaab refugee camps after intelligence reports pointed to a coordinated plot aimed at causing mass casualties in the capital. The operation involved sustained surveillance, undercover intelligence gathering and close coordination among multiple security units.

The crackdown led to the recovery of a significant cache of weapons and other materials believed to have been destined for Nairobi. Security officers seized 600 bullets, pistols, grenades, explosives and drugs during the operation. Authorities believe the weapons were being assembled and prepared for transport ahead of the planned attack.

“Months of surveillance and covert intelligence gathering on a terror network operating within the Dadaab refugee camps led to the recovery of arms and ammunition, including 600 bullets, pistols, grenades, explosives, and drugs, all destined for targets in Nairobi.”

Counter Terrorism Policing said the individuals had intended to strike during the holy month of Ramadhan, a period that often sees increased movement of people and large gatherings, making it a sensitive time for security agencies.

“Plans by the terrorist group Al-Shabaab to kill many Kenyans in Nairobi have once again been foiled by the intelligence agency,” the statement read in part.

The agency added that months of surveillance and covert intelligence gathering on a terror network operating within the Dadaab refugee camps led to the recovery of the arms and ammunition.

Investigations further revealed that the network was also exploring the possibility of kidnapping foreigners and hijacking vehicles as part of a broader plan to spread fear and disrupt normal activities in the city.

“The terrorists, who had planned to carry out the attack during the month of Ramadhan, were also exploring possibilities of kidnapping foreigners and hijacking vehicles,” the agency said.

Several individuals linked to the network have since been arrested and remain in custody as investigations continue. Security officials said they are working to establish the full scope of the plot, including identifying possible collaborators and financiers.

The authorities assured the public that Nairobi remains secure, crediting the success of the operation to the dedication of officers who work around the clock to protect the country.

“Nairobi remains safe because of the brave young men and women in our security agencies who spend long hours tracking down dangerous terrorists and criminals,” the agency said.

Authorities have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities as efforts to safeguard the country continue.
