An open letter to Ruto and Raila: Why rescue Sakaja?
By David Nthua, September 3, 2025Dear President William Ruto and ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga,
On Tuesday, September 2, 2025, you both separately convened MCAs’ meetings at State House, Nairobi, and Orange House, Upper Hill, to intervene and rescue Governor Johnson Sakaja from impeachment.
More than 80 Members of the County Assembly had already endorsed the motion, yet the political arithmetic changed after your involvement. Sakaja survived, but Nairobians are left wondering who truly benefited from this decision.
Nairobi hospitals in crisis
Healthcare is a devolved function, yet under Governor Sakaja’s watch, public facilities across Nairobi are collapsing.
Citizens narrate stories of neglected wards, absent staff, and long queues that end without treatment in some public healthcare facilities.
Patients are left vulnerable as resources are redirected to projects that appear designed for public relations rather than service delivery.
Nairobians expected reforms in hospitals; what they continue to receive is frustration.

Rising insecurity and paid goons
Insecurity in the capital is no longer whispered; it is now broadcast daily on social media.
TikTok videos from various content creators have sent warnings that lately, walking through Nairobi’s Central Business District after 9 pm almost guarantees an encounter with knife-wielding muggers. Despite promises of safety, the situation worsens.
The claims that goons are routinely paid to intimidate opponents or silence protesters continue to damage the city’s image.
During the Gen Z protests in June, Kenyans witnessed individuals disrupting peaceful demonstrations while police looked the other way.
The case of the late blogger Albert Ojwang only deepened concerns, as questions linger about who really controls the streets of Nairobi.
At City Hall, where laws should be debated and enacted, Nairobians instead see a marketplace for political deals.
The image of governance is one of bargains struck behind closed doors rather than transparent service to the people.
By shielding Governor Sakaja, you have placed politics above accountability. Nairobi deserves a governor who delivers on healthcare, security, and integrity.
Protecting him without addressing these failures makes Nairobians question whether their leaders truly care about the capital or only about preserving alliances.
Sincerely,
A concerned Nairobi citizen
