5 safety guidelines motorists should adhere to on Nairobi Expressway

In a public update shared on July 31, 2026, the road management firm reminded drivers that “Smooth driving starts with safety.”
To help road users navigate the elevated toll road, the operator shared guidelines for motorists to keep in mind while on the Nairobi Expressway.
Here are the five guidelines set by the company to ensure a safe commute:
1. Reduce speed near toll stations
Approaching toll plazas requires drivers to slow down quickly after cruising at higher speeds along the main corridor.
Moja Expressway advised motorists to “reduce speed as you approach the Toll Stations” to protect toll collectors and prevent rear-end crashes, which frequently occur during busy morning and evening rush hours.
2. Maintain lane discipline
Proper vehicle positioning is important for keeping traffic moving smoothly.
Switching between lanes without signalling creates confusion and increases the risk of side-swipe accidents on the fast-moving highway.
3. Keep left unless overtaking
To prevent traffic jams in the fast lane, the road management firm reminded motorists to keep left unless overtaking.
Following this standard rule keeps the right-hand lane clear for passing vehicles, allowing traffic to flow smoothly without forcing drivers to brake suddenly.
4. Use the emergency lane only for emergencies
The company warned drivers against misusing the dedicated outer shoulder along the highway corridor.
It stressed that “The emergency lane is strictly for emergencies,” advising motorists not to use it to bypass traffic jams or make non-urgent stops.
Parking or driving on this lane creates hazards for oncoming traffic and delays emergency responders.
5. Never reverse on the main highway
Reversing on a high-speed toll road remains one of the most dangerous driving violations.
Moja Expressway issued a firm directive stating, “No reversing on the main highway.”
Motorists who miss their intended exit toll station should continue to the next available exit, rather than stopping or driving backwards against oncoming vehicles.
