What is an interior architecture course?

Interior architecture is a course that combines architecture, interior design and building science to create indoor spaces that are functional, safe and visually appealing.

While interior decoration mainly focuses on furnishings and aesthetics, interior architecture involves planning and transforming interior spaces to improve how they function while meeting building regulations and safety standards.

Professionals in the field consider factors such as lighting, ventilation, accessibility, acoustics, materials, sustainability and the efficient use of space. They work on a wide range of projects, including homes, offices, hotels, hospitals, schools, shopping malls and public buildings.

The profession has become increasingly important as developers and property owners seek buildings that are both attractive and practical while promoting environmental sustainability.

Career opportunities for Interior Architecture graduates

A qualification in interior architecture opens doors to careers in the construction, architecture and design industries.

Graduates can work as interior architects, interior designers, space planners, workplace designers, hospitality designers, retail designers, healthcare facility designers, exhibition designers, furniture designers and lighting consultants.

Interior architecture professionals are employed by architectural firms, construction companies, property developers, interior design consultancies, government agencies and multinational organisations.

As demand grows for sustainable, functional and innovative spaces, graduates with expertise in interior architecture continue to find opportunities across residential, commercial and public sector projects.
