Former Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Nick Mwendwa has shared details of his poultry venture, revealing that his large flock of kienyeji chickens has grown from just seven original birds.

Speaking about the business during a visit to his farm by rapper Kennedy Ombima, widely known as King Kaka, Mwendwa told him that his entire flock of chickens has grown from a very small beginning, noting that all the chickens seen today originated from just seven birds, highlighting the humble origins of the operation.

Hawa kuku wote unaona? Wametoka kwa kuku saba,” Mwendwa revealed.

According to him, ensuring the chickens remain truly kienyeji means avoiding sourcing birds from outside unknown systems, which could compromise quality and authenticity.

Tulirealise kama tunataka kumake sure ni kienyeji huwezi kuleta kuku kutoka nje kwa sababu hujui kama si kienyeji,” he added.

Additionally, Mwendwa stated that anyone purchasing chickens from him is guaranteed pure kienyeji quality.

Ukinunua kuku kwangu, na guarantee ni kienyeji.”

Patience over profit

He further highlighted that his enterprise currently involves around 110,000 pure kienyeji chickens, describing it as a result of patience and long-term focus over quick profit.

“Pure kienyeji. Patience over profit,” Mwendwa stated.

Broiler vs Pure kienyeji

Earlier, Mwendwa shared his opinion about rearing pure kienyeji chicken over broilers and layers, insisting that pure kienyeji chickens are the best option.

He added that the economics of kienyeji farming are favourable, describing it as the best form of animal farming, and noted that success in it requires understanding what others do not know.

“Forget broilers. Forget layers. Pure Kienyeji ndio Kuku. The economics pia ziko juu. Its the best animal farming ever, you just need to know what others don’t,” he shared.

Importance of rearing pure kienyeji chicken

Rearing pure kienyeji chicken is increasingly becoming popular among farmers due to its low production costs and high market demand.

One of the main advantages is that kienyeji chickens are hardy and can survive in different weather conditions with minimal care. Unlike commercial breeds, they are less prone to diseases, reducing the need for expensive veterinary services.

Kienyeji chickens also feed on natural foods such as insects, grains, and kitchen leftovers, which makes their maintenance more affordable for small-scale farmers.
