National Girlfriend Day explained: Why the celebration isn’t really for men

While many people assume the occasion is dedicated to men appreciating their romantic partners, the day was originally created to celebrate something quite different, the special bond between women.
According to the National Day Archives, National Girlfriends Day was established in 2006 by Allie Savarino Kline and Sally Rodgers.
Their aim was to encourage women to celebrate the friendships they share with one another and recognise the important role female friendships play in their lives.

Originally, National Girlfriends Day was created to celebrate the unique bond between women, whether they are sisters, mothers and daughters, classmates, colleagues or lifelong friends.
It recognises relationships built on trust, support and shared experiences.
The day also encourages women to spend quality time together, laugh, share memories, celebrate milestones and support one another through life’s challenges.
Many women use the occasion to organise brunches, dinners or girls’ outings, while others exchange gifts, send heartfelt messages or simply reconnect with friends they have not spoken to in a while.
The celebration is meant to honour the women who offer encouragement, keep each other’s secrets and stand by one another during both difficult and joyful moments.
Why confusion still exists
Part of the confusion surrounding the day stems from the word “girlfriend”. Historically, the term referred to a close female friend before it gradually evolved to also describe a woman in a romantic relationship.
As a result, National Girlfriend Day has taken on a broader meaning over the years, with many couples now using the occasion to celebrate their romantic relationships as well.
That does not mean men cannot participate. Many boyfriends choose to mark the day by surprising their partners with flowers, gifts or romantic dates.
However, it is worth noting that the holiday’s original purpose was never intended to be another Valentine’s Day, but rather a celebration of female friendship and the meaningful connections women build with one another.
Whether you choose to celebrate your best friend or your romantic partner, National Girlfriend Day serves as a reminder to appreciate the people who make life brighter through love, friendship and unwavering support.
