What to do if you feel unsafe while dining in a resturant
By Cynthia Lodite, July 14, 2026A meal at a restaurant should be a chance to relax, catch up with friends or enjoy time with family, however when something feels off at a restaurant, the safest response is often to trust your instincts.
Most dining experiences are enjoyable, but knowing how to react if you feel uncomfortable can help you avoid a situation that escalates.
Whether the concern is an aggressive customer, suspicious behavior or an unsafe environment, staying calm and acting early can make a difference.
Trust your instincts
Feeling uneasy does not always mean there is an immediate threat, but it is worth paying attention to.
If someone is making you uncomfortable, the atmosphere feels hostile or you notice behavior that raises concern, do not dismiss those feelings.
Personal safety experts often advise that it is better to leave a situation unnecessarily than to remain somewhere that feels unsafe.
Move to a safer location
If possible, relocate to a busier part of the restaurant where staff and other customers are present.
If you are seated in a secluded corner or outdoor area with few people around, ask to change tables. Being in a visible, populated space can discourage unwanted behavior.
Alert restaurant staff
Restaurant managers and staff are responsible for maintaining a safe environment.
If another customer is harassing you, someone appears intoxicated and disruptive, or you witness threatening behavior, discreetly inform a server or manager.
Many restaurants have procedures for handling security concerns and can intervene before the situation worsens.
Do not hesitate to leave
You are never obligated to stay because you have already ordered or paid.
If you feel unsafe, leave the restaurant as soon as it is practical to do so. If you are waiting for food, ask for it to be packed to go or simply leave if your safety is the priority.
Stay connected
If you are dining alone, let a trusted friend or family member know where you are, especially if it is late at night.
If something feels wrong, call or text someone and remain on the phone until you reach a safe place. Many smartphones also allow you to share your live location with trusted contacts.
Protect your personal belongings
Keep your phone, wallet and bag close to you. Avoid placing valuables on the table where they can be easily snatched, and do not leave personal items unattended when visiting the restroom.
Be cautious outside the restaurant
Your safety does not end when the meal is over. Walk to your vehicle or transport pick-up point in a well-lit area.
If someone has been making you uncomfortable inside the restaurant, avoid leaving alone if possible.
Ask a staff member or companion to accompany you to your car or wait with you until your ride arrives.
