5 questions you can ask at the end of your first job interview
By Cynthia Lodite, September 8, 2026For first-time job seekers, an interview can feel like an exam where the employer does all the asking.
But when the interviewer says, “Do you have any questions for us?” your response matters too.
Saying “No, I have no questions” may make you appear uninterested, even if you are simply nervous or unsure what to ask.
Asking a few thoughtful questions can show that you are interested in the position and want to understand what working for the organisation would be like.
Here are five questions you can ask at the end of your first job interview.
1. What would a typical day in this role look like?
This question can help you understand what your day-to-day responsibilities would actually involve.
A job description may list several duties, but the reality of the position could be different.
The answer can also help you understand what the employer expects from someone in the role and what tasks you would likely handle most often.
2. What would you expect from the person in this role in the first few months?
This is a good way to understand how your performance would be measured.
You can ask about the priorities for the first three or six months and what the employer would consider a successful start.
For a first-time job seeker, the question also gives you an idea of whether the organisation provides guidance and support as new employees settle into their roles.

3. What opportunities are there to learn and grow?
Getting your first job is not only about earning a salary. It can also be an opportunity to gain skills and build your career.
Ask whether the organisation offers training, mentorship or opportunities to take on new responsibilities.
The answer can help you determine whether the job can contribute to your long-term career goals.
4. What is the team i would be working with like?
Your colleagues can have a major impact on your experience at work.
Asking about the team gives you an opportunity to learn how the department is structured and who you would work with most closely.
You could also ask how the team normally communicates and collaborates on projects.
5. What Are the Next Steps in the Hiring Process?
This is one of the most useful questions to ask before leaving the interview.
It helps you understand what happens next, whether there will be another interview, when you might expect feedback and whether the employer needs any additional information from you.
It also prevents you from spending days wondering whether you should wait or follow up.
