How to spot a secretly toxic partner before it is too late
By Paulette Mboga, January 24, 2026We all want love, but sometimes it sneaks up in disguise.
A partner may seem perfect at first. Charming, attentive, and full of sweet words, but little red flags start showing over time. Spotting a secretly toxic partner early can save you heartbreak, stress, and a lot of wasted time.
Here are three ways to protect your heart without losing your sanity.
Pay attention to how they treat others
A toxic partner often shows their true colours through how they treat people who aren’t “important” to them. If they are rude or dismissive to waiters, friends, or strangers, that’s a warning sign.
Toxic people often wear a mask with you, but it slips when they feel no one is watching.

Notice their reactions when things do not go their way or when someone disagrees with them. Kindness only when convenient is not real kindness.
Listen to your gut (and your friends!)
Your instincts are powerful and usually correct. If something feels off, it probably is. Toxic partners are sneaky as they manipulate, gaslight, or twist words, but your gut will sense it before your mind does.
Friends can also be your early-warning system. They often see patterns you might ignore because you’re caught up in love. If multiple people are quietly concerned about their behaviour, pay attention. It’s not being dramatic, it’s being smart.
Check for controlling behaviour disguised as care
Toxic partners love to act like they’re helping or protecting you, but their real goal is control. They act like they’re doing it for your own good, but really they’re trying to control every move you make. If someone constantly questions your choices, criticises your friends, monitors your activities, or isolates you from others, these are major red flags.

Love should never feel like a trap. A healthy relationship gives you freedom, joy, and trust, not fear or doubt. Spotting a toxic partner early doesn’t mean you’re paranoid. It means you value yourself. Pay attention to red flags, trust your instincts, and don’t ignore small warning signs.
Real love makes you feel happy, safe, and supported, not drained and anxious. By being aware and careful, you can avoid unnecessary heartbreak and find someone who truly respects and cherishes you.
