How to cook in open-plan kitchen without filling your sitting room with food smells
By Valerian Khakayi, April 16, 2026If you reside in a bedsitter, a one-bedroom, or even a modern apartment in Kenya, it is likely that your kitchen seamlessly connects to the sitting room.
It looks appealing until you fry fish or make wet fries, and suddenly, your couch, curtains, and even your clothes smell like dinner for the next two days.
The struggle is real, especially in a rental where you cannot break walls or install heavy systems. But the good news is that there are simple, practical ways to cook without turning your entire house into a kitchen.
Here are some of the ways to keep your sitting room fresh after cooking.
- Start with ventilation
Before you even light the cooker, open your windows and door. If you have a kitchen window and a sitting room window, open both to create airflow.
That cross-breeze helps push smells out instead of letting them settle in your house.
If you can afford it, a small standing fan placed near the window works wonders. It helps direct the cooking smell outside instead of spreading it around the house.

- Cook smart, not smoky
Some foods produce stronger smells than others. Frying fish, deep frying chips, or cooking nyama choma indoors will definitely linger.
Use a lid when frying or boiling.
Lower the heat to avoid burning food; it is worth noting that burnt food smells travel fast.
If possible, do heavy frying earlier in the day when windows can stay open longer.
Make plans in advance if you are aware that today is “strong-smelling cooking day”.
- Use your balcony or corridor
Many Kenyan rentals have a small balcony or shared corridor. If your landlord allows it, you can use a portable cooker there for things like frying fish or boiling beans.
Even a simple move like shifting your gas cooker closer to the window can reduce how much smell spreads inside.
- Don’t underestimate sufuria lids and covers
It sounds basic, but covering your food while cooking traps a lot of the smell.
Leaving sufurias open is one of the biggest reasons the whole house ends up smelling like stew.

- Deal with smells immediately after cooking
Once you are done cooking, do not just sit and relax; instead, act fast by washing utensils immediately, taking out food waste and trash and wiping surfaces to remove oil and spills.
The longer the residue stays, the longer the smell lingers.
- Use natural smell neutralisers
You do not need expensive air fresheners; just boil water with lemon slices or vinegar for a few minutes.
Alternatively, you can light a scented candle if you have one or brew some tea or coffee, the aroma helps balance strong food smells.
Even leaving a bowl of baking soda overnight can help absorb odours.
- Fabric is your biggest enemy
Curtains, carpets, and cushions trap smells more than anything else.
If possible, choose lighter curtains that are easy to wash, avoid heavy carpets near the kitchen area and air out cushions regularly.
In a Kenyan rental, where space is limited, these small adjustments make a big difference.
Open-plan living is convenient, but it needs a bit of strategy, especially in Kenyan rentals where options are limited. With a few small habits, you can enjoy cooking your favourite meals without your entire house smelling like a hotel kitchen.
Because let us be honest, no one wants visitors sitting on a couch that smells like yesterday’s omena.
