How to clean your mattress, and why you should

Your mattress collects sweat, body oils, dust, dead skin and everyday dirt over time.
If it is not cleaned regularly, it can develop odours, stains, dust mites and even mould.
A proper cleaning every six months can help keep it fresh, healthier and longer lasting.
Step 1: Remove bedding and clean the surface
Start by stripping the bed completely. Remove sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers and mattress protectors. Wash them according to their care labels.
Leave the mattress uncovered for some time so fresh air can reach it. Open windows if possible.
Next, clean the surface using a vacuum cleaner or a soft brush. Focus on seams, corners and edges where dust gathers most.
This removes loose dirt, dust and debris before deeper cleaning begins.
Step 2: Remove smells with baking soda
Sprinkle baking soda evenly across the mattress surface. Baking soda helps absorb odours and moisture naturally.
Leave it for several hours, or overnight if possible. After that, vacuum it off or brush it away gently.
If smells remain, lightly mist the mattress with diluted white vinegar, then allow it to air out fully. Do not soak the fabric.
Step 3: Treat stains and spills carefully
For fresh spills, blot immediately with a clean dry cloth. Do not rub, as rubbing can spread the stain deeper.
For light stains, mix mild soap with warm water. Dampen a cloth slightly and blot the stained area gently. Use only a small amount of moisture.
For tougher marks, make a paste using baking soda and a little water. Apply it to the stain, leave it for about 30 minutes, then wipe away with a damp cloth.
Avoid over-wetting the mattress, especially memory foam, because trapped moisture can cause damage.
Step 4: Dry the mattress completely
Drying is one of the most important steps. A damp mattress can develop mould and unpleasant smells.
Stand the mattress upright if possible or place it in a well-ventilated room. Open windows and use a fan to speed up drying.
Wait until it is fully dry to the touch before putting bedding back on.
Step 5: Keep it clean for longer
Use a mattress protector to shield against sweat, spills and dust. Wash bedding weekly and make sure it is dry before reuse.
Vacuum the mattress lightly during sheet changes and spot clean stains quickly before they set.
Deep clean the mattress every six months, or more often if you have pets, allergies, frequent spills or heavy sweating.
