How office walls and dark skin block the sun

When sunlight hits bare skin, ultraviolet rays trigger the body to produce Vitamin D naturally.However, melanin, the natural pigment that gives dark skin its rich colour, acts as a protective shield.

While melanin guards against solar damage, it also slows down the rate of Vitamin D synthesis, requiring dark-skinned individuals to spend more time in the sun than light-skinned people to produce the same amount.

When this natural biological factor combines with long office shifts, tinted glass windows, and daily commutes in enclosed vehicles, urban residents rarely receive direct sunlight.

Medical research confirms that living in a tropical region does not automatically shield city dwellers from this quiet health issue. In a peer-reviewed study examining adult health at a tertiary hospital in Kenya, published in PMC Research Notes, researchers revealed that “The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was 17.4%.”

The data also showed that another 42.6 per cent of healthy participants had insufficient levels.This means six out of ten urban adults lacked optimal Vitamin D.

Office workers, pregnant mothers, and infants kept indoors face the highest risk.

Everyday steps to fix the shortfall

Unchecked Vitamin D deficiency leads to persistent fatigue, muscle weakness, frequent body aches, and brittle bones over time. It also weakens the immune system, making the body more vulnerable to common infections.

Because the human body cannot manufacture this nutrient without sunlight or dietary support, resolving the shortfall requires making a few changes to daily routines.

Stepping outside for 15 to 30 minutes between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm allows bare arms and legs to absorb beneficial sunlight. Adding nutrient-dense foods such as egg yolks, oily fish like tilapia or salmon, beef liver, and fortified dairy into your weekly meals helps rebuild internal reserves.
