Materials differ in how they handle scratches, drops, and long term wear.
Understanding the differences between Gorilla Glass, Dragontrail, and sapphire helps explain why some screens survive falls while others crack easily.
How each type of glass is made and what it means
Gorilla Glass is developed by Corning Inc.. It is a chemically strengthened glass made through an ion exchange process.
This creates compressive stress on the surface, making it more resistant to cracks and everyday damage.
Dragontrail glass is produced by AGC Inc.. It uses a similar chemical strengthening process and is designed to balance durability with thinness.
Many mid range smartphones use Dragontrail as an alternative to Gorilla Glass.
Sapphire crystal is a different material altogether. It is made from synthetic sapphire, which is extremely hard.
It is commonly used in high end watches and some premium smartphone components such as camera lenses.

Strength comparison
When comparing strength, it is important to separate two things: scratch resistance and drop resistance.
Scratch resistance
Sapphire ranks highest. It is second only to diamond in hardness, meaning it resists scratches from most everyday objects.
Gorilla Glass and Dragontrail are also scratch-resistant, but they can still show marks over time from harder materials like sand particles.
Drop resistance
Gorilla Glass and Dragontrail perform better here. Because they are slightly more flexible, they absorb impact better when a phone falls.
This reduces the chances of shattering.
Sapphire, despite being harder, is more brittle. It is more likely to crack or shatter on impact compared to chemically strengthened glass.
Why stronger does not always mean better
Many people assume the hardest material is the best. In reality, smartphone manufacturers prioritise a balance.
A screen needs to:
- Resist scratches from daily use
- Survive accidental drops
- Remain thin and clear
Gorilla Glass and Dragontrail are widely used because they offer this balance.
Sapphire is typically reserved for smaller areas like camera lenses, where scratch resistance is more important than impact resistance.
What this means for everyday users
No smartphone screen is unbreakable. Even the strongest glass can crack depending on how and where the phone lands.
To reduce damage:
- Use a tempered glass protector
- Avoid placing phones in pockets with sand or metal objects
- Use a protective case to absorb impact
Sapphire is the most scratch resistant, but not the most practical for full screens. Gorilla Glass and Dragontrail provide better overall durability by balancing strength and flexibility.
