10 highly marketable courses KCSE graduates can pursue in universities and colleges
By Steve Ireri, January 10, 2026Nearly one million candidates are today reflecting on their performance after the release of the 2025 KCSE examination results, an exercise that concluded one of the most closely watched academic cycles in recent years.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced the results on Friday, January 9, 2026, reporting improved performance at several levels of the grading scale.
Of the 993000 candidates who sat the examination, 1932 attained grade A, while 270000 scored grade C plus and above, qualifying them for direct entry into university. The results were presented to President William Ruto ahead of the official release, with the Head of State expressing satisfaction with the overall outcome.
The Ministry of Education also highlighted a rise in the number of candidates from public day schools achieving university-qualifying grades, as well as improved overall pass rates compared to the previous year.
This cohort will be remembered as the final group under the 8 4 4 curriculum, closing a chapter that has defined Kenya’s education system for decades.
As candidates celebrate or come to terms with their results, the conversation is now shifting toward life beyond secondary school.
There are courses that students who have just received their KCSE results may consider pursuing in universities and colleges, courses that respond to Kenya’s economic needs and which are more likely to translate into employment opportunities after graduation.
Here are some ten of them:
Computer Science
One of the most marketable courses today is Computer Science. This programme trains students in software development, programming languages, data structures, artificial intelligence and systems design. A strong background in Mathematics and Physics at KCSE level is usually required because the course relies heavily on logic and problem-solving skills.
Computer Science remains highly marketable because Kenya’s digital economy continues to expand, with increasing demand for software developers, cybersecurity experts and systems analysts in banks, start-ups, telecommunications firms and government institutions.
Nursing
Another course that continues to offer strong employment prospects is Nursing. Students pursuing nursing study human anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, clinical practice and community health. Biology and Chemistry are essential KCSE subjects for admission into this programme.
Nursing remains in demand due to persistent shortages of healthcare workers in hospitals, clinics, NGOs and county health facilities. Beyond local opportunities, Kenyan nurses are also competitive in international job markets, making the course particularly attractive.
Commerce and Business courses
Business-related courses such as Bachelor of Commerce and Business Administration also remain popular and marketable. These programmes expose students to accounting, finance, economics, marketing, human resource management and entrepreneurship.
A good performance in Mathematics and English at KCSE level is important. What makes business courses marketable is their versatility, as graduates can work in virtually every sector of the economy or start their own enterprises. With professional certifications such as CPA or ACCA, employability improves significantly.
IT courses
Information Technology is another course that continues to attract strong demand. Unlike Computer Science, IT is more practical and focuses on networking, systems administration, database management and web technologies. Students with strengths in Mathematics and Computer Studies often excel in this field.
IT professionals are needed in both public and private sectors as organisations increasingly rely on digital systems to deliver services efficiently.
Engineering courses
Engineering courses, particularly civil, electrical, mechanical and software engineering, remain among the most respected and marketable programmes in Kenya. These courses demand strong performance in Mathematics and Physics due to their technical nature.
Engineering graduates play a key role in infrastructure development, energy production, manufacturing and technological innovation. As Kenya continues to invest in roads, housing, power projects and digital infrastructure, engineers remain indispensable.
Data Science Artificial Intelligence courses
Data Science and Artificial Intelligence is an emerging course that is quickly becoming one of the most marketable fields globally. Students learn how to analyse large datasets, build predictive models and develop intelligent systems that support decision-making.
A strong foundation in Mathematics and computing subjects is essential. The course is marketable because businesses, banks and research institutions increasingly rely on data to guide strategy, reduce costs and improve efficiency.
Law Courses

Environmental and Climate-related courses
Environmental and Climate-related courses have also gained relevance as the country grapples with climate change, food security and environmental conservation.
