Challenges

HIV/AIDS remains a significant public health issue in Kenya. While strides have been made in prevention and treatment, key populations, including adolescents, sex workers, and rural communities, still face barriers to care.

Awareness and participation at the community level remain critical to ending the epidemic.

How Kenyans can get involved

World AIDS Day is not just a symbolic occasion; it is an opportunity for action. Here’s how Kenyans can get involved:

  • Participating in organised marathons: A section of Kenyans on Sunday, November 30, 2025, turned out for the World AIDS Day 2025 Half Marathon celebrations, which concluded with great energy and inspiration as Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign & Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, graced the event as the chief guest. The marathon highlighted Kenya’s commitment to raising awareness about HIV/AIDS, recognising community efforts, and promoting healthy living.
  • Get Tested: Know your HIV status. Many hospitals, clinics, and mobile testing centres provide free services.
  • Support Local Organisations: Volunteer or donate to NGOs that provide HIV/AIDS education, treatment, and support.
  • Raise Awareness: Share accurate information on social media to reduce stigma using hashtags like #WorldAIDSDay2025.
  • Encourage Safe Practices: Promote consistent use of condoms, early treatment, and responsible sexual behaviour.
  • Combat Stigma: Foster conversations grounded in compassion, ensuring those living with HIV/AIDS feel supported.

Kenya continues to aim for the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets: 95% of people living with HIV knowing their status, 95% of those diagnosed on sustained treatment, and 95% of those on treatment achieving viral suppression. By taking small actions, every Kenyan can help move the nation closer to these goals.
