In 2023, fuel prices crossed the Ksh200 mark for the first time in the country’s history following months of a turbulent economy.
The prices started to ease towards the end of 2023, and in January 2024, the prices dropped further below the Ksh200 mark for diesel and kerosene.
Here’s how fuel prices changed from January to December 2024;
January
In January, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced prices of diesel and petrol both eased by Ksh5 per litre while kerosene declined by Ksh4.82 per litre.
This meant a litre of petrol retailed at Ksh207.36, diesel traded at Ksh196.47, and kerosene was Ksh194.23 in Nairobi between January 15 and February 14, 2024.
February
In February 2024, EPRA announced the reduction of fuel prices by Ksh1 for petrol, diesel and kerosene.
This would see a litre of super petrol, diesel and kerosene retail at Ksh206.36, Ksh195.47 and Ksh193.23 respectively.
March
In March 2024, a further fuel reduction was announced by the regulator, easing the burden for Kenyans for the fifth consecutive month.
The maximum allowed petroleum pump price for super petrol, diesel and kerosene decreased by Ksh7.21, Ksh5.09 and Ksh4.49 per litre respectively.
As a result, a litre of super petrol, diesel and kerosene retailed at Ksh199.15, Ksh190.38 and Ksh188.74 respectively.
April
Fuel prices further dropped by Ksh5.31, Ksh10.00 and Ksh18.68 for a litre of super petrol, diesel and kerosene respectively in April 2024.
This meant that a litre of super petrol, diesel and kerosene retailed at Ksh193.84, Ksh180.38 and Ksh170.06 respectively in Nairobi.
May
In May, EPRA continued the trend of reducing fuel prices, reviewing downwards the prices of super petrol, diesel and kerosene by Ksh1.00, Ksh 1.20 and Ksh1.30 per litre respectively.
This saw the prices come down to Ksh192.66 per litre for petrol, Ksh179.39 per litre for diesel, and Ksh169.01 per litre for kerosene.
June
In June, EPRA announced a fresh reduction of fuel prices, with super petrol dropping by Ksh3 per litre, diesel by Ksh6.08 per litre and kerosene by Ksh5.71.
This meant that super petrol would retail at Ksh189.84 per litre in the capital city, diesel at Ksh173.10 per litre and Kerosene would sell at Ksh163.05 per litre.
July
EPRA further announced a reduction of fuel prices for the period from July 15, 2024, to August 14, 2024.
The maximum allowed petroleum pump price for super petrol, diesel and kerosene went down by Ksh1, Ksh1.50 and Ksh1.30 per litre respectively.
As a result, super petrol, diesel and kerosene retailed at Ksh188.84, Ksh171.60 and Ksh161.75 per litre respectively in Nairobi.
August
Fuel prices remained unchanged for the period between August 15 and September 14, 2024.
This means that super petrol, diesel and kerosene retailed at Ksh188.84, Ksh171.60 and Ksh161.75 per litre respectively, in Nairobi.
September
Between September 15 and October 14, the maximum allowed petroleum pump price for super petrol and diesel remained unchanged while the price of Kerosene decreased by Ksh3.43 per litre.
This means that super petrol, diesel and kerosene retailed at Ksh188.84, Ksh171.60 and Ksh158.32 per litre respectively in Nairobi.
October
In October, EPRA reduced the retail prices of super petrol, diesel and kerosene by Ksh8.18, Ksh3.54, and Ksh6.93 per litre, respectively.
This further lowered fuel prices to Ksh180.66 per litre of super petrol, Ksh168.06 for diesel and Ksh151.39 for a litre of kerosene within Nairobi.
November
The maximum allowed petroleum pump prices for super petrol, diesel and kerosene remained unchanged for the period between November 15 to December 14, 2024.
In Nairobi, super petrol, diesel and kerosene continued to retail at Ksh180.66, Ksh168.06 and Ksh151.39 for 30 days.
December
EPRA reduced prices of super petrol, kerosene, and diesel in December.
In its announcement, the energy regulator stated that the maximum allowed petroleum pump prices for super petrol, diesel, and kerosene decreased by Ksh4.37 per litre, Ksh3 per litre, and Ksh3 per litre respectively.
The prices of super petrol, diesel, and kerosene were therefore set at Ksh176.29, Ksh165.06, and Ksh148.39, respectively.
