Mobile data has become a necessity in modern life.

The need to stay updated on whatever is happening and informed in a 24/7 economy is no longer a luxury for the privileged and moneyed.

Whether it is getting updates on business opportunities from our network of friends and colleagues or job opportunities from companies, being connected to the internet is a must.

Therefore, lack of data can cause anxiety and stress. But there ways to ensure that whatever data we have can stretched to last as long as possible.

Here are smart ways to save on data.

Seek data packages that are pocket friendly. Telkom Kenya, for instance, has cheap data bundles that cost as little as Sh49. These bundles also come with extra bonus for use by late night hawks whose life seems to start from midnight, especially college students who pull all-nighters studying for exams or watching television/movie series.

1. Switch to Wi-Fi as often as possible

There are many businesses establishments that offer their clients and workers free Wi-Fi. If you’re in a restaurant or shop, always ask for the Wi-Fi password. As long as you a customer or a potential customer, the staff are always eager to give out their passwords.

2. Disable background apps

Some apps use internet and power while running in the background. Some phones notify users of high-internet and power consuming apps. But always check what’s running the background and disable.

3. Set a data limit alert

Many phones allow users to set a daily data limit. You can view how much data you’ve used daily, weekly or monthly and plan on what to set as a limit. Once you reach that limit, the internet cuts off automatically.

4. Turn off data

Even though this seems obvious, many are the times many mobile data users forget this simple trick. When you’re not browsing and the phone is on, it still consumes your data bundles. Therefore, it is wise to turn off the mobile data whenever you’re done browsing.

5. Turn off 4G

Even though 4G does not use more data than 3G, chances are that because of its high speed you will want to use more data. For someone on a tight budget, 4G is not advisable.
