Zootropolis 2 becomes Hollywood’s biggest animated film ever

Zootropolis 2 has become Hollywood’s highest-grossing animated film ever, raking in Ksh219.3 billion globally.

The film, known as Zootopia 2 in some countries, has surpassed the previous record holder, Inside Out 2, which earned Ksh217.0 billion after its 2024 release.

Zootropolis 2 now ranks as the ninth most successful film in global box office history, behind blockbusters such as Avatar, Titanic, Avengers: Endgame, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

While Zootropolis 2 holds the Hollywood record, the highest-grossing animated movie overall remains China’s Ne Zha 2, which earned Ksh283.8 billion last year.

Released in November with an estimated budget of Ksh19.3 billion ($150 million), Zootropolis 2 is the sequel to Disney’s 2016 hit, Zootropolis.

The film follows rabbit police officer Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and con artist fox Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) as they pursue a mysterious new reptilian resident, Gary De’Snake (Ke Huy Quan).

“This milestone belongs first and foremost to the fans around the world whose enthusiasm made it possible,” Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman said. “We’re incredibly proud of our filmmakers… Zootopia 2 is an extraordinary achievement, and we’re grateful to everyone who helped bring it to life.”

The film had already achieved the biggest opening weekend for an animated release, coinciding with Thanksgiving in the US, and became the fastest animated Hollywood film to reach Ksh129 billion ($1 billion) globally.

Despite this success, fantasy adventure Ne Zha 2 remains ahead, having earned most of its Ksh 283.8 billion in China.
