Waihiga Mwaura opens up on surreal moment that led him to Joyce Omondi
By Valerian Khakayi, April 19, 2026Kenyan journalist Waihiga Mwaura has shared a deeply personal reflection on how he first came to notice his wife, Joyce Omondi, during her early days on television.
Speaking during Joyce Omondi’s final show on Rauka on Sunday, April 19, 2026, Waihiga described her last show as a surreal moment, recalling a Sunday morning many years ago when he tuned in to the programme and saw a new presenter on set.
He said he was instantly drawn to her calm and natural way of presenting, so much so that he ended up watching longer than planned, even admitting he got late for church that day
“This is such a surreal moment. This show holds a very special place in my heart. Many years ago, on a Sunday like this, I woke up, put on the programme, and there was a new presenter on set, and I ended up watching the programme a bit longer than I was intending to watch. I actually got late for church,” Waihiga recalled.

Waihiga added that he was impressed by how she carried herself on screen, prompting him to take to social media and comment on her presentation.
According to him, that simple moment eventually became the beginning of a much bigger story.
“I thought the presenter was very natural in the way she composed herself and carried the programme, so I went to social media and commented the same and the rest, as they say, is history,” he added.
Waihiga on Joyce’s exit
Reflecting on Joyce’s journey at Rauka, Waihiga said the show has held a special place in their lives, noting how significant it has been to watch her minister through the platform over the years.
He described her exit as the end of a season, adding that new chapters are now beginning.
“The show has been very important, knowing how my wife has enjoyed ministering to the world through it, and this feels unreal, but sometimes a season comes to an end, and a new chapter begins, and I think that is where we are,” he added.

He also took time to appreciate the production team behind the show, acknowledging the effort required to run a morning programme consistently.
“For me, I will say, I know the demands for a morning show, and I want to thank the whole team that has worked with her diligently and the audience,” Waihiga said.
Joyce Omondi’s final appearance marks the end of her four-year journey on Rauka, a show she has been widely praised for shaping with her calm, faith-driven presence.
