Nairobi County Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, has announced that he helped raise KSh500,000 for the family of viral “Kwa Mbae” boy Musa Kihara, bringing fresh hope to the household as they seek treatment funds for his ailing brother.

In a statement shared on his X account on Monday, April 27, Mosiria said the money was raised to support Musa’s brother, Lewis Baraka, who is battling throat cancer and is currently undergoing treatment at Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital after surgery.

“God used Mbae to help his sick brother, who was battling throat cancer, get help to go to KUTRH, where he is undergoing treatment after surgery,” Mosiria stated.

Mosiria said he joined the initiative after being contacted by content creator Obidan, and together with supporters, they managed to raise half a million shillings toward the family’s target.

“I want to thank my brother Obidan for calling me on board. I managed to fundraise for them Ksh 500K (half a million) out of their target of 2M,” he said.

He added that support was not only directed to the family, but also to the boda boda rider who recorded the viral clip that brought national attention to Musa’s story. In a move many saw as fitting, the rider who helped tell the story is now receiving support too.

“I also advised that we shall also support the bodaboda rider who recorded him so that he can own his own bodaboda. I gave him 20K for upkeep,” Mosiria stated.

The official also thanked residents of Tharaka Nithi for showing up in large numbers during the fundraiser, saying community support played a key role in the effort.

“Watu wetu wa Tharaka Nithi, asante kwa kuja in numbers,” he added.

Young Musa went viral in a video while giving directions using the now-famous phrase “Kwa Mbae,” turning him into an internet sensation. But behind the humour that made many laugh was a family facing a painful medical crisis and struggling to raise Ksh2 million for treatment. As Kenyans learned about their situation, the viral moment slowly transformed into a real-life fundraiser.

The latest fundraising boost adds to the growing support the family has received from well-wishers, public figures and boda boda groups in recent days. What started with a roadside clip and a child’s memorable phrase has now become a story of strangers stepping in to help, with the viral “Kwa Mbae” moment opening doors the family may never have imagined.
