Popular masseur and digital content creator Stephen Collins Karuiki, widely known as Steve Wakaniaru, has raised questions about the growing trend of young people choosing to be childfree.

In a video shared on his official social media accounts, Wakaniaru expressed surprise at how common the choice has become, asking his followers what has influenced so many people to opt out of having children.

According to him, most people are openly sharing it on social media.

“Why are so many people choosing to be childfree?” Wakaniaru questioned.

All of a sudden nimeanza kuona watu wengi childfree, especially kwa social media and I wonder mulienda class wapi ama ni reality gani imewahit tu from nowhere? hamukuwa wengi hivi nyinyi mlikuwa mnataka kukuwa na watoto but sahii mko wengi ata the number is countless.

The influencer went on to question whether this trend is a result of personal choice, social pressures, or simply a new openness to publicly declaring one’s decision not to have children.

“What is going on? ni nini hii imewafanya kutoka nowhere, ama mlikuwa ni ile hamukuwa mmepata guards za kutangaza msimamo?” he added.

He asked them to explain why he wanted to know what was going on and why they did not want children.

Ebu mnieleze nataka kujuwa, what is going on,kwa nini hamtaki watoto?” Wakaniaru stated.

Childfree trend

The decision to remain childfree is becoming increasingly visible, especially on social media, where many young people openly share their lifestyle choices. What was once considered unconventional is now sparking discussion and curiosity among peers, family, and society at large.

Many who choose to be childfree cite a range of reasons, from focusing on careers and personal growth to financial considerations or concerns about overpopulation and environmental sustainability. For others, the decision is simply about not feeling ready or interested in the responsibilities that come with parenthood.

Steve Wakaniaru, noticing the trend, expressed his surprise and curiosity online, asking why so many people appear to be opting out of having children from nowhere. He wondered whether the trend was driven by personal choice, societal influence, or the freedom to openly express one’s stance in today’s social media-driven world.

The rise of the childfree lifestyle challenges traditional societal norms, particularly in cultures where having children is considered a key milestone of adulthood.

While some criticise this choice, many see it as a legitimate expression of personal freedom and autonomy, an affirmation that there is no one-size-fits-all path to fulfilment in life.
