Sarah Mtalii compares divorce pain to death: ‘Women grieve alone in silence’

Sarah Mtalii has compared the pain of divorce to death, saying women often go through it alone and in silence.

In an interview on YouTube on Saturday, January 17, 2026, she said that, unlike death, where people gather to mourn together, divorce leaves women without support and understanding from those around them.

“When a woman is going through a divorce, the support cannot support you,” Sarah said.

She added, “You know divorce is as hard as death.” According to her, society does not treat divorce with the same seriousness as loss through death.

She explained the difference by saying, “Venye mtu akikufiwa, watu wanajaa kwa nyumba wana grieve with the person.”

She said the experience is very different for women going through separation.

“But when you are going through a divorce, there is no one to grieve with you,” she said.

Sarah said many women are instead told to endure difficult marriages.

“People think unafaa uvumilie,” she said, noting that emotional support is often missing.

She added that people rarely walk with women through the process. “Like they don’t walk with you,” she explained.

Why divorce feels lonely

Sarah said family background also affects how women are treated during divorce. She explained that some families distance themselves when divorce happens.

“Also, if you come from those families who have never seen divorce, when they hear someone is divorcing, they detach,” she said.

Her comments come after she previously opened up about her own marriage struggles. Sarah revealed that problems in her marriage began in the fourth year after she got married. She said that period changed everything she believed about marriage.

“I would say, shida zlianza on the fourth year. 4th year after we were wedded,” she said.

She added, “Hapo ndio nilijua it is not what we vowed.” According to her, the reality of the situation became clear during a very sensitive time.

Sarah said her pregnancy made it impossible to ignore the problems.

“When I was pregnant with my son, that is when I knew there was trouble in paradise,” she said.

She explained that the experience opened her eyes to the true state of the marriage.
