The Whisper Man review: What happens when a serial killer knows your child?

Released on Friday, August 28, 2026, the movie stars Adam Scott as Tom Kennedy, a widowed crime writer struggling to find his missing son, Jake.
The case takes an even darker turn when investigators discover similarities between Jake’s disappearance and the crimes of Frank Carter, a notorious serial killer who is already behind bars.
For Tom, the search for his son soon becomes a journey into a case that has haunted his family for years.
A father’s nightmare
Tom turns to his estranged father, Pete Willis (Robert De Niro), a retired detective who helped capture Carter.
Their complicated relationship gives the film another layer. Pete is carrying the weight of his past, while Tom is desperate to understand what has happened to his son.
Adam Scott delivers a serious performance as Tom, capturing the panic and helplessness of a father who has little control over what is happening around him.
Michelle Monaghan plays Detective Amanda Beck, who leads the investigation and tries to connect the evidence as the search for Jake intensifies.
Killer from the past
The film becomes more interesting when Frank Carter enters the story.
Michael Keaton plays the imprisoned killer with a quiet menace rather than turning him into a loud, theatrical villain. His scenes with De Niro are among the strongest moments in the film.
The possibility that an old serial killer case could be connected to a new disappearance gives The Whisper Man its central mystery.
The story has a familiar feel, with echoes of other serial-killer thrillers, but the cast keeps it engaging.
Worth your time?
The Whisper Man is not a groundbreaking addition to the genre. Some of its twists feel predictable, while parts of the emotional story do not land as strongly as the performances suggest they should.
Still, the film has enough atmosphere and tension to keep you watching.
Its strongest moments come from the relationship between Tom and Pete, the mystery surrounding Jake’s disappearance and the unsettling presence of Carter.
At 111 minutes, the thriller moves at a reasonable pace and does not overstay its welcome.
If you are looking for a completely original serial-killer story, The Whisper Man may disappoint. But if you want a dark Netflix thriller built around a missing child, a troubled family and a killer whose past refuses to stay buried, it is worth adding to your watchlist.
