‘Obsession’ review: A love wish turns into a terrifying nightmare

By , July 3, 2026

Obsession is a supernatural horror thriller that turns a familiar love story into something dark and disturbing. At the centre of the film is Bear, a shy young man who has feelings for his close friend Nikki but lacks the courage to tell her.

Instead of being honest about his feelings, Bear makes a choice that changes both their lives. He finds a strange object known as the One Wish Willow, which promises to grant one wish. Bear breaks it and wishes that Nikki would love him more than anyone else.

At first, it seems like his wish has worked. But as Nikki’s feelings grow stronger, Bear discovers that the love he wanted has come at a frightening cost.

Bear gets the relationship he always wanted

Bear works at a music shop alongside his friends Ian, Sarah and Nikki. He has quietly liked Nikki for a long time, but he worries that telling her the truth could destroy their friendship.

One evening, Bear comes across the One Wish Willow while looking for a gift. The item appears harmless, almost like a cheap toy, but it carries a dark power. After making his wish, Bear wakes up to a new reality where Nikki suddenly sees him differently.

She begins spending more time with him, and for a short while, Bear enjoys the attention he has wanted for so long. He finally has the relationship he imagined. However, the happiness does not last.

Nikki’s love soon becomes intense and frightening. She does not want Bear to leave her side, becomes upset when he speaks to other people and starts behaving in ways that make his friends uneasy.

Nikki becomes trapped by the wish

The film does not present Nikki’s behaviour as ordinary jealousy. It becomes clear that something has taken control of her life and changed her into someone she does not recognise.

Nikki begins appearing in strange places, watching Bear while he sleeps and reacting badly whenever she feels he may not love her enough. Her actions become more dangerous as the story moves forward.

What makes the film unsettling is that Nikki did not choose this relationship. The wish has taken away her ability to decide how she feels. Bear may have wanted love, but he has forced Nikki into a situation she never agreed to.

As the danger grows, Bear starts to understand that his wish was not romantic. It was selfish, and he may have placed Nikki in serious danger.

Friends begin to see the truth

Ian is one of the first people to question what is happening. He notices that Nikki is acting differently and struggles to believe Bear’s strange explanation about the One Wish Willow.

Sarah also becomes caught up in the growing crisis as the group tries to understand how to stop the curse. Their friendship is tested as Bear hides parts of the truth and tries to fix a problem that has already gone too far.

The story becomes more frightening when Bear learns that the One Wish Willow does not simply give people what they want. It twists their wishes into something painful.

A horror film with an important message

Obsession uses jump scares, dark scenes and violent moments to build tension, but its main message is about control and consent. The film asks whether love can ever be real when one person has been forced to feel it.

Bear begins as someone viewers may feel sorry for because he is lonely and unsure of himself. However, the story slowly shows that his decision has serious consequences for Nikki.

The film also has moments of dark humour, especially through Ian’s reactions to the strange events happening around him. These lighter scenes do not remove the fear, but they give the story brief breaks before the next frightening moment.

Obsession is not a simple romance story. It is a dark warning about wanting someone so badly that you forget they have a right to choose for themselves.

Bear’s wish gives him the relationship he dreamed about, but it turns Nikki’s life into a nightmare. The film is tense, uncomfortable and at times difficult to watch because of its violence and disturbing scenes.
