Lupin Part 4 review: Assane Diop finally turns himself in after a series of heists

The story follows Assane Diop, a clever thief who uses disguises, careful planning, and ideas inspired by the Lupin books to stay ahead of the police and those trying to catch him.
The fourth part picks up from the ending of Lupin Part 3, where Assane makes a major decision that changes his situation. After spending years trying to protect his family while staying away from the police, he finally turns himself in and ends up behind bars.
For a character who has escaped from some of the most difficult situations, being in prison creates a very different challenge.
Assane is finally behind bars
At the end of Part 3, Assane decides that sacrificing his freedom is the best way to protect the people closest to him. His family includes Claire, his partner, and Raoul, his son. Assane also wants to keep his mother and close friend Benjamin Ferel safe.
His decision means that the man who has spent much of the series running from the authorities is now inside a prison cell.
However, Lupin has never been a story about Assane simply accepting defeat. The character has repeatedly found ways out of situations where escape appears impossible.
A new chapter for the gentleman thief
Netflix has confirmed that Assane returns in Part 4, with the story continuing his journey as France’s famous wanted thief.
The new episodes will also bring back familiar characters, including Claire, Benjamin and police detective Youssef Guédira. Guédira has spent years studying Assane’s methods and is one of the few people who can understand the connection between his crimes and the Arsène Lupin books.
Other returning characters include police officer Sofia Belkacem.
The presence of these characters means the new part is not starting from scratch. Instead, it continues the relationships and problems that have developed across the previous three parts.
What happened before Part 4?
For viewers who may have forgotten the earlier parts, Assane’s story began with his father, Babakar Diop.
Babakar was wrongly accused of stealing a valuable necklace belonging to the wealthy Pellegrini family. His imprisonment and later death changed Assane’s life.
As an adult, Assane became fascinated by the fictional thief Arsène Lupin. He then used the character’s tricks and ideas while trying to expose the people responsible for what happened to his father.
Over the first three parts, Assane became both a wanted criminal and something of a public favourite because of his intelligence and ability to expose corruption.
By Part 3, however, his dangerous life had become a serious threat to his family. His decision to surrender was therefore less about giving up and more about protecting the people he loved.
Will Part 4 bring another big escape?
This is likely to be one of the main questions surrounding the new episodes.
The series has always built its appeal around Assane finding unusual solutions to difficult problems. Prison removes many of the freedoms he normally uses during his schemes, making his next move more difficult.
At the same time, the story does not suggest that Assane’s journey is over.
Netflix has confirmed that all eight episodes of Lupin Part 4 will arrive on October 23, 2026. The new chapter brings the gentleman thief back for another round of crime, mystery and carefully planned moves.
For fans of the series, the biggest attraction will be seeing how Assane deals with life behind bars and whether he can once again stay several steps ahead of everyone around him.
