Mosiria’s advice after busting street families transporting guns and handcuffs

Nairobi County Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, has given his advice after a chilling encounter with criminals disguised as street families.

Mosiria noted in a post on Facebook on Sunday, March 29, 2026 that not everyone who appears homeless in the streets is genuinely in need of help, as some are heavily involved in criminal activities.

“Not every person you see on the streets is suffering. Some are working, doing all forms of dirty work, including criminal activities. Others are selling drugs, and some are even involved in transporting firearms.

He confirmed that in the course of his work, he has met some of these characters and urged the public to stop giving street families money and instead give them food.

“I have met some of them, and I always tell people: stop giving money to street families, give them food instead.

Video of encounter with young men

To drive his point home, Mosiria shared a video capturing his interaction with young men who claimed to be street families involved in criminal activities.

One was caught with handcuffs, while the other had a gun hidden in his clothes and tied around his waist.

The young man caught with the handcuffs gave conflicting accounts on how the handcuffs came to be in his possession, with Mosiria surrendering him to the police for further legal actions.

How handcuffs came to be in his possession

He first claimed to have obtained it from street children, but later changed, claiming that he retrieved it from a bag along Luthuli street and was at odds to explain why he had not surrendered it to the police.

“Huyu ni jamaa ambaye nimempata akitembea nikaambia maafisa wafanye search kwa bag yake. Kupiga search wakapata pingu ya polisi. So these are criminals na awa ndio wanakuibia town. Wanakupiga pingu wanajifanya ni maaskari alafu wanakuibia. Na ikona serial numebr, askari ametest na kigungu yao na inafungua.

This loosely translates to: “We have met this young man in the streets and found handcuffs upon searching his bag. These are criminals who impersonate police officers and rob people.

He paraded the young man and appealed to anyone who may have complaints against him to report to the police in Nairobi, expressing his well-founded belief that he may be a person of interest in crimes in the city.
