Lilian Ng’ang’a shares her HYROX journey from no gym routine to 58-minute finish
By Ascah Mwango, May 15, 2026Former Machakos County First Lady and author Lilian Ng’ang’a has offered a glimpse into her HYROX challenge experience, describing a journey marked by grit, humour, and unexpected bursts of strength.
In a post shared via her Instagram page on Friday, May 15, 2026, she opened up about how she stepped into a completely new fitness world and pushed herself beyond her usual routine.
“I wanted a challenge and so I signed up for a hyrox. I don’t gym so I had to enroll in a gym and train 🏋🏾♀️” Lilian shared.
What started as a personal experiment quickly turned into a test of endurance, especially in the more punishing exercises that refused to cooperate on command. Still, she kept her spirits light, mixing determination with humour about the struggle.
“I pusheeeed but burpees refused to cooperate. We’ll keep trying 😅”
Like many first-time competitors, her body had its own opinions about the intensity of the training, with her knees making sure she did not ignore them.
“The knees complained alot, too :)”
Ahead of the event, she had set her own pace goals, aiming for a strong finish that would reflect both discipline and progress, while her trainer had pushed for an even faster target.
“My goal was to finish just under 1 hr 30 mins, my trainer’s time was to finish under 1hr 15 mins.”

Despite the expectations, she exceeded both her own and her trainer’s benchmarks, wrapping up the challenge in an impressive time that left her celebrating momentum over perfection.
“I did 58 mins. 💃 No rushing, just momentum! To do again? Definitely!”
HYROX is a global outdoor fitness race that blends running with functional workout stations such as sledge pushes, burpees, rowing, and lunges. It is designed to test both endurance and strength in a structured format, attracting both elite athletes and everyday fitness enthusiasts who want to measure their overall conditioning in a competitive but standardised environment.
Aging, beauty
This comes a few days after she shared a lighthearted reflection on self-care, ageing, and the everyday relationship people have with makeup and confidence.
In a post shared on Instagram on Friday, May 8, 2026, she documented a self-care moment and opened up about how skin naturally changes with age, noting it is something she has become more aware of over time.
She also reflected on the experience of going out without makeup, admitting that while she does it sometimes, there are still moments when she feels like something is missing before stepping out. It was an honest, everyday confession that sits between confidence and habit, something many people quietly understand even if they do not always say it out loud.
She wondered whether the real goal might be to reach a place where makeup-free days feel completely effortless and carefree.
“A little self-care, as they say:) It’s interesting to see how our skin changes as we age.. Can you leave the house makeup-free? I do sometimes, but still feel like something is missing 😃 Maybe the goal is to go make up free and be carefree – Idk,” she shared.
