Larry Madowo flags changes in Senegal President’s profile amid AFCON drama

By , March 19, 2026

Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has created a buzz on social media after making changes in his profile in the wake of a decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to strip the West African nation of their 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and award it to Morocco.

The change was executed at a time when Morocco is eagerly waiting to get the trophy following the decision that awarded the Atlas Lions a 3-0 victory over the Lions of Teranga.

Faye changed his profile picture, replacing it with a new one that boldly displays the trophy that Senegal picked after a hard-fought final that had the scoreline stand at 1-0.

The new profile picture shows the trophy resting in a cabinet in the background with Faye hard at work.

Madowo flags the changes

The change was picked up almost immediately, with renowned journalist Larry Madowo jokingly giving his interpretation.

“Senegal’s president casually updates his social profile pictures to include the AFCON trophy behind him. How do you say “come and get it if you can” in Wolof?” Madowo stated.

Social media personality Alinur Mohamed also gave a similar interpretation, writing:

“Senegalese President Bassirou Faye updated his profile picture with the AFCON Trophy in his cabinet. Hii ni kuambia CAF kujieni kujieni kama unaweza?”

The decision by CAF sent shockwaves across the continent and the football world, sparking widespread reactions.

Next steps for Senegal

Senegal has revealed that it will appeal the decision, which it termed as unfair, unprecedented, and unacceptable.

”The Government of Senegal expresses its deep dismay following the decision delivered by the Appeals Jury of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), aimed at stripping the Senegal national team of its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and awarding it to Morocco,” the statement signed by Marie Rose Khady Fatou FAYE, Secretary of State to the Prime Minister, reads in part.

The Senegalese Football Federation has confirmed that it will challenge the decision before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
