Kikuyu content creator Wajoy opens up on painful grieving process days after mum’s death
By Steve Ireri, April 12, 2026Kikuyu content creator Joy Mathenge, popularly known as Wajoy, has opened up about the emotional turmoil she is experiencing following the death of her mother.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, April 12, 2026, Wajoy described grieving as a confusing and overwhelming journey, noting that emotions shift unpredictably from one moment to the next.
She explained that there are times she feels okay, only for waves of sadness to return unexpectedly, leaving her struggling to understand her own feelings.
“Let’s talk about GRIEVING: This thing, you don’t even understand your feelings. Sometimes you’re okay, sometimes you’re not. People grieve differently,” she wrote.

According to Wajoy, grief has left her battling a deep sense of emptiness that is difficult to explain, with moments where all she longs for is love and comfort.
She further revealed that in the process, she sometimes finds herself confusing the kind of love she needs, noting that even relationships and interactions with others fail to fill the void left by her mother’s absence.
Wajoy admitted that the emotional strain has also affected her behaviour, saying she experiences sudden mood swings, including moments of anger without clear cause, as well as conflicting feelings of love and frustration.
“Sometimes you feel empty, emptiness that you can’t explain, the only thing you want is love, sometimes you confuse the love you want, sometimes you love the age of your mum, but you don’t get the satisfaction that you want,” she added.
At times, she noted, the pain becomes so overwhelming that even small triggers can lead to tears, while on other occasions she finds herself engaging in actions she later considers out of character.
Despite the turmoil, Wajoy emphasised that healing takes time, encouraging others who have gone through similar loss to share their experiences in order to support one another.
She further honoured her late mother, urging her to continue resting in peace.
“Sometimes you love a man, but then you end up being disappointed because the love you want is different, but you feel that you’re not getting it. Sometimes you can’t control the emotions; you love, hate, and get unakasirika haraka for no good reason. Sometimes you feel that you just want to drink.’Uji’ – you end up doing silly things, yani, it’s confusing. Sometimes you just want to cry, and anything can trigger you. Healing is a process. Come, write a comment about how your grieving was, you might help a soul. CONTINUE RESTING MUMMY,” she wrote.

Untimely passing
The loss came as a shock to many of her followers, especially since her mother had recently appeared in her skits, where she was widely admired for her lively personality and humour.
In earlier tributes, Wajoy described her mother as a “vibe”, recalling how she would often worry about how she looked in videos, even as she brought joy and authenticity to the content.
The emotional moment, captured during a livestream, showed the depth of her pain, with friends and family stepping in to support her as she struggled to remain composed.
Her mother, a devoted member of the PCEA Church, was later honoured in a ceremony attended by family, church members, and friends, who gathered to celebrate her life and faith.
