Githurai man goes viral with flawless TV-style sign-off during demolitions

A light moment emerged amid the pain of demolished livelihoods at Githurai market after a local man unexpectedly delivered a flawless television sign-off during a live media assignment.

The moment happened when Mathew Ndung’u, a K24 Digital correspondent, was covering the overnight demolition of traders’ stalls at Githurai market in Ruiru, Kiambu County, on Thursday, February 19, 2026.

The demolitions affected more than 1,600 traders, whose structures were demolished to pave the way for a planned bus park.

In a joking exchange, Ndung’u asked a passerby, Kimani wa Wairimu, to help him “do an outro” for Kameme TV.

“Please come help me do the outro for Kameme TV,” the reporter said, handing him the microphone.

What followed left many stunned.

Kimani delivered a well-crafted commentary that touched on the hardships facing Africans, particularly drought and social suffering.

“The real drought in Africa is not water. Parents are inconsolable as children continue to suffer,” he said with confidence.

He then wrapped up the segment like a seasoned journalist, declaring:
“Reporting for Kameme TV, I am Kimani wa Wairimu,” as Ndung’u applauded him.

The clip has since gone viral, drawing praise from Kenyans on social media who described Kimani as eloquent and naturally gifted, with many suggesting he deserves a platform to showcase his talent.

The humorous moment unfolded against a grim backdrop.

Traders at the busy Githurai market are counting losses after their stalls were demolished by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), which plans to construct a bus park along the highway stretch.

While traders confirmed they were issued notices to vacate, they say the time given was too short and that no alternative trading site was provided.

“We don’t know where to go. Some of us had not removed our goods from the stalls. We found everything flattened in the morning,” said Susan Kimani, one of the affected traders.

On Wednesday, February 19, 2026, irate Githurai Market traders made a section of Thika Road impassable when they set tyres ablaze and protested the plan to demolish their structures, unaware that darkness was the only hindrance to the demolitions.
