Activist Julius Kamau on Monday, August 17, staged a dramatic protest outside Jogoo House in Nairobi, where he chained himself to the gates of the police headquarters while demanding accountability from the National Police Service.

Kamau was leading a group of activists who had gathered outside the offices of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja. The protesters were calling for Kanja’s resignation, citing concerns over alleged police brutality, deaths in custody and reported cases of abductions.

In a striking display of protest, Kamau attached himself to the gates, forcing police officers to intervene. Footage from the scene showed a heated confrontation between the activist and officers as he remained chained to the entrance.

The demonstration also focused on recent events in Homa Bay, with the activists demanding answers over what they described as growing concerns about police conduct and accountability.

According to reports from the scene, police moved to stop the protesters from addressing the media. At least six activists were reportedly arrested during the incident.

Kamau’s decision to chain himself to the gates appeared intended to make the protest difficult to ignore. Rather than simply holding a placard or addressing a crowd, the activist physically positioned himself at the entrance of the police headquarters, turning the demonstration into a highly visible confrontation.

What Julius Kamau said

Siogopi bana, niko tayari kufa nikipigania Wakenya,” said Kamau. The activists were demanding the immediate resignation of Inspector General Douglas Kanja and greater accountability over alleged police abuses, deaths in custody and reported abductions. Their protest was also linked to concerns arising from the recent chaos in Homa Bay.

The protest has once again placed Kamau at the centre of debate surrounding activism and police accountability in Kenya. His actions also highlight the increasingly confrontational methods some activists are using to draw public attention to their demands.

For Kamau, chaining himself to the gates was more than a symbolic gesture. It was a direct attempt to force attention onto the issues the protesters wanted authorities and the public to confront.
