Ciru Muriuki opens up about using weight-loss injections, costs and side effects

By , December 20, 2025

Media personality Ciru Muriuki has opened up about her weight-loss journey, revealing that she turned to medical interventions, including weight-loss injections, after struggling with rapid weight gain and low energy levels.

Speaking during a BBC interview on December 13, 2025, Ciru said she reached a point where she felt too big and too sluggish, prompting her to take decisive action.

Her first step was undergoing a gastric balloon procedure in 2023, which helped kick-start her journey towards better health.

However, by mid-2025, Ciru noticed her weight rising again. She explained that it was not that the earlier interventions had failed, but rather that she could see a worrying trend forming and wanted to stop it before it escalated.

“I knew where this was going, and I needed to stop it before it got there,” she said.

Further, she stated that her research into weight-loss injections revealed benefits beyond shedding kilos.

One of the key factors that influenced her decision was learning that the injections help reduce cravings.

According to Ciru, the treatment has significantly changed her relationship with food.

“One of the things that this treatment has helped is that it has completely changed how I relate with food. I do not doubt that once I stop the treatment, because I am on it for six months, I will be finishing in February, because I don’t constantly have food on the brain,” she stated.

She also disclosed the financial commitment involved, revealing that the protocol she is on costs approximately Ksh65,000 per month. While the treatment has been effective for her, Ciru acknowledged experiencing side effects, including hyperacidity and constipation.

This comes two years after the former BBC journalist stunned her social media followers with her incredible weight loss journey.

In June 2023, Ciru revealed her impressive transformation and opened up about the impact it had on her physical and mental health.

Ciru’s journey began in December 2022, when she found herself struggling with her weight and experiencing related health issues. Overwhelmed by her condition, she made a life-changing decision in February to reclaim her health and enlisted the help of the renowned weight loss clinic, Nairobi Bariatric.

“When that pic of me was taken last Dec, I was SHOOK. I could not understand how I had gotten to that size,” Ciru said.

“Then on top of that, my health had begun to suffer. My joints hurt, and I could not go up a flight of stairs without huffing and puffing. Let’s not even talk about my mental health. My confidence was in the toilet and I hated looking in the mirror.”
