TV host Laura Mbatha sparks debate over Wi-Fi and mobile data usage

By , June 9, 2026

TV host Laura Mbatha has questioned how internet services work and why home Wi-Fi cannot be used outside.

In a video posted on her Instagram page on Monday, June 8, 2026, Laura wondered why people who pay for home Wi-Fi cannot continue using the same internet connection once they step outside their houses.

While speaking to her followers, the TV host admitted she was trying to make sense of what she sees as a gap between home internet and mobile data services.”Tell me if I’m making sense,” she asked.

Her question about Wi-Fi and mobile bundles

Laura explained that she regularly pays for Wi-Fi at home and feels that the service should somehow extend beyond the walls of her house.

She joked that if she were constantly consuming large amounts of online content, she would be relying on Wi-Fi throughout the day. “If I were selling those one-hundred-shilling videos, I would be using Wi-Fi 24 hours a day, right?”

According to Laura, what confuses her is that despite paying for internet access at home, she still has to purchase separate data bundles whenever she leaves.

Why buy bundles after paying for Wi-Fi?

The TV host pointed out that she uses the same phone line whether she is connected to Wi-Fi at home or using mobile data elsewhere. “But when I leave the house, I have to buy bundles. Yet when I pay for this Wi-Fi at home, I use the same line that, when I go outside, needs more bundles,” she said.

Her remarks touched on a question that many internet users have asked at one point, particularly when managing multiple internet subscriptions.

Could home internet be transferred to a phone?

Laura went on to question why internet providers cannot link the internet paid for at home to a customer’s mobile phone for use while travelling. She suggested that it would make more sense if the internet available through home Wi-Fi could simply follow the user wherever they go.

“If I can use my Wi-Fi 24 hours a day, why can’t they connect the line I use with that Wi-Fi? The bundles from that Wi-Fi should be put on my phone so I can use them when I’m outside instead of buying different bundles,” Laura stated.

Her humorous conclusion

As she wrapped up her thoughts, Laura jokingly wondered whether customers might actually be paying for the distance between their homes and wherever they travel.

“Does it make sense? Or am I paying for the distance? I don’t get it,” she asked.

Her comments have since attracted reactions online, with some social media users relating to her confusion while others stepped in to explain the difference between fixed broadband internet and mobile network data services.
