Shaquille O’Neal reveals why he never made it into the Avengers
By Katemarthason Okudo, August 23, 2026Former NBA star Shaquille O’Neal has revealed why his long-held dream of appearing in a Marvel Avengers movie never came true.
The basketball Hall of Famer, who has taken on several acting roles over the years, said he approached Marvel about joining the superhero franchise. However, he was told that his recognisable face could make it difficult for audiences to see him as a character.
Shaq says he was too recognisable
O’Neal said he would like to take on more action roles, but Hollywood executives had raised concerns about his fame.
Speaking to Variety in an interview published on August 21, 2026, the 54-year-old said his appearance could make it difficult for viewers to focus on the character he was playing.
“I would love to do more action roles, but we were told by top Hollywood executives that I’m too big,” O’Neal said.
He explained that audiences would quickly recognise him whenever he appeared on screen, regardless of the role. “And what they mean by that is when I pop up on the screen everyone will go, ‘Oh, that’s Shaq!’” he added.
According to O’Neal, the same issue could affect roles that require audiences to believe he is someone else.
“So, if I’m trying to play a doctor or anything, my character won’t be believable,” he said.
His Avengers dream never happened
Despite the setback, O’Neal said he had made an effort to join Marvel’s biggest superhero franchise.
He recalled asking to be part of the Avengers films, only to receive an honest response from the studio.
“I wanted to be in the Avengers, and they were like, ‘Shaq, we f–kin’ love you, and we’d love to put you in, but if your face pops up on screen, people are going to go, ‘Hey, that’s Shaq!’” he said.
O’Neal said he eventually accepted the explanation, although it was difficult because he had wanted an Avengers role for years.
His interest in joining the franchise was also known earlier. In 2018, he said in an interview that he wanted to appear in an Avengers film and even joked about taking on Robert Downey Jr.’s character. “I would love to be in one of the Avengers movies,” he said at the time.
Shaq turns his attention to The Rock
With an Avengers appearance unlikely, O’Neal now has another action movie ambition. The former basketball star said he would like to share the screen with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, with the two facing each other in a film.
“I want to do a movie with The Rock so I can beat him up,” O’Neal told Variety.
Asked whether he could take down Johnson, O’Neal responded with confidence, saying, “Oh, easy! Barbecue chicken.” For now, an Avengers role remains one acting opportunity O’Neal has not managed to secure, despite his long-standing interest in joining the Marvel franchise.
