Sad end of Bichanga family: Inside Kisumu Mzungu Hawker and Kelvin’s troubled final chapter in US
By William Muthama, September 10, 2026The cross-cultural love story that once captivated Kenyans as the “Bichanga Family” has taken a painful turn after American-born Sylvia Bichanga and her Kenyan husband, Kelvin “Koree” Bichanga, separated following years of marriage.
Sylvia, popularly known as the “Kisumu Mzungu hawker,” became a familiar face in Kenya after she started selling American-style snacks on the streets of Kisumu.
The couple built a following by documenting their relationship, marriage, faith and family life on their YouTube channel, The Bichanga Family.
Their journey, which began in Kisumu, later took them to the United States, where they hoped to build a new life with their young son.
However, after relocating to Ohio in January 2025, their relationship eventually came under strain, leading to a separation that has seen Sylvia return to Kenya with their son, Taavi, while Kelvin remains in the US.
How Sylvia met Kelvin in Kisumu
Sylvia first came to Kenya in 2016 with her parents and brothers on a missionary assignment with Conservative Christian Mission.
The family settled in Kisumu’s Milimani area, where Sylvia met Kelvin following a robbery at their home.
She accompanied her father to an electronics repair shop where Kelvin worked, and she later described their first encounter as love at first sight.
The relationship was not immediately welcomed by Sylvia’s family.
Her preacher father initially disapproved and sent her back to the US for a year. Sylvia said their relationship survived family pressure, restrictions on communication and periods when their phones were taken away.
Eventually, both families accepted the relationship, paving the way for their wedding.
Sylvia and Kelvin married in Kenya on April 24, 2021.
From financial struggles to the Kisumu Mzungu Hawker
The early years of their marriage were not easy financially.
Sylvia had sold property and a car in the US, while Kelvin worked in electronics repair before later taking up taxi and Uber driving.
About seven months after their wedding, Sylvia teamed up with a friend to make and sell American-style snacks.
She sold apple and mango pies and mandazi around Kisumu..
Parenthood and a new life in America
The couple welcomed their first child in July 2024.
After years of immigration delays, including complications surrounding Kelvin’s earlier visa process, the family eventually secured his spousal visa.
In January 2025, Sylvia, Kelvin and Taavi moved to Ohio, Sylvia’s home state.
Their life in America initially appeared to be a fresh start.
They shared photographs after attending church, including images in the snow, and continued producing content for their followers.
The family also documented road trips and spoke about plans to tour the US in an RV.
But as their life in America progressed, their joint appearances became less frequent.
Kelvin’s mother also suffered a stroke in Kenya in March 2025 while the family was living in the US.
In the final months before their separation, Sylvia and Kelvin were still in the United States, but they increasingly appeared to be living separate lives.
Sylvia later returned to Kenya with Taavi, while Kelvin remained in America.
Sylvia speaks about the marriage breakdown
On Tuesday, September 8, 2026, Sylvia addressed the breakdown of her marriage in a 29-minute video titled “My Final Letter to Kelvin Bichanga.”
She said the previous six weeks had been emotionally difficult, marked by anger, sadness, crying and moments of laughter.
Sylvia claimed the separation was not about the GoFundMe campaign that had recently sparked public discussion.
She instead claimed that problems in their marriage had been building for years and that Kelvin had been dishonest and unfaithful during their relationship.
Sylvia said she had discovered messages on Kelvin’s phone involving another woman and claimed the discovery made her question the years they had spent together.
“I’m just now realising that four years of dating and five years of marriage were shared with others,” she said.
She also alleged that Kelvin had developed a pattern of seeking attention from other women.
According to Sylvia, she eventually gave him an ultimatum: be honest with her or leave.
She claimed that after a meeting involving people close to the couple, Kelvin packed his belongings and left.
Sylvia further claimed that attempts to save the marriage through therapy failed, saying her family and church were prepared to raise about $12,000 for counselling, but Kelvin declined.
She said she had remained in the marriage because she loved him and kept hoping they could work through their problems.
However, she said she eventually reached a point where she could no longer continue without trust.
“I cannot keep checking phones and keep questioning explanations,” she said.
Despite the separation, Sylvia said she still loved and forgave Kelvin and remained grateful for the memories they shared and, most importantly, for their son.
She said she was now beginning to rebuild her life and planned to continue The Bichanga Family channel with Taavi.
Sylvia also said she intended to travel with her son and accepted that some followers who were mainly interested in the couple’s relationship might no longer follow the channel.
The claims were made by Sylvia in her video and have not been independently verified. Kelvin has disputed the allegations.
